The city of Houston is the fourth largest city in the United States, located in Texas.

Being a large city, it is quite easy to find good things to buy, good food to eat, and good places to visit. Texans would claim Houston is a good city, and the number of tourist spots in the area would keep anyone entertained for as long as their visit would allow them to.

For the naturally curious, their is the Houston Museum of Natural Science, an altar for the different branches of science. The museum has a butterfly center, a planetarium with stars and the usual revolving satellites, models of dinosaurs and much more.

There's also the Museum of Fine Arts, which has a very large and expensive collection of art pieces, most from around the world. Renaissance, tribal art, expressionist, abstract and even the pre-Dark ages. It also hosts art from its visitors, students from the surrounding art schools or rising artists, whose works may one day take the art world.

We have the Houston Downtown aquarium, a 7-something acre complex that has renditions of famous waterways like the Amazon River, Louisiana swamp and others. There's also a Ferris wheel inside, a helipad (makes me wonder what this is for) and a train tunnel that passes underneath a shark tank. Feel the excitement having a shark swim above you in menacing circles!

The Houston Zoo is a huge crowd drawer that boasts a collection of 4,500 animals, ranging from mammals, birds, felines, reptiles (alligators, anyone?). The zoo is also well known for having reared the largest elephant calf in all of the recognized zoos around the country. It is also probably the only zoo that hosts the Giant Eland, a rare specie of savanna antelopes. Believe me, being near this great-horned being is a wonderful experience that cannot be emulated by anything else.

Protecting Your Fruit Trees from Frost

Even if your land is 250 feet or more above sea-level, that it cannot necessarily be regarded as frost-free because it could be possible for there to be higher land around, so that the orchard that was planted as mine was would be affected because of the higher land contours round about.

Of course, the ideal thing to do is to plant the wind-break or hedge so as to form a screen several years before the fruit is to be planted. It is invariably necessary to give protection against south-westerly gales and, in my own case, it has been vital to have equally strong hedges to combat the north-easterly winds!

It is very difficult to know how one can advise a fruit grower to prevent damage by frost. On a small scale orie can help by covering over individual bushes with sacking or sheets of newspaper when it is feared that there will be a serious frost that night. One can forecast a frost in the spring when the blossoms are likely to be ruined by using a wet and dry bulb thermometer.

In order to prevent damage by rabbits and hares, it is necessary in most districts to protect the trees with wire netting. One of the ways of doing this is to use a wire guard for each tree. One-inch mesh wire netting is bought for this purpose, 3 feet wide.

A countryman will always tell you that you may expect a night frost if you look up at the sky in the evening and can see the stars clearly and brightly. There will be no clouds about and the air will be absolutely still. It is on such a night that a frost may be expected. Some people have made arrangements, on nights like this, to cover up the tops of their soft fruit cages with sacking and this has the effect of keeping the warm air from rising.

If there is a thick hedge at the bottom of a sloping orchard, then this may act as a barrier and not allow the freezing air to flow out to lower levels. On one occasion at Petersfield, caused the orchard-owner to cut down part of a thick hedge to form an opening 8 feet wide, and this proved sufficient to let out the collecting freezing air, and for the first time for many years the orchard cropped successfully because the blossoms were not ruined by frost.

Texas houses the Forbidden Gardens, a 40-something acre of flatland, miniature figurines, clay statues and everything Chinese.

Built and funded under the meticulous taste of Mr. Ira P. H. Poon, dubbed 'Mr. Poon'; the whole of the attraction mimics and replicates the over all feel of Chinese atmosphere and culture. The Forbidden Garden, is by far, the most visited of Chinese parks all around the world. Even the authentic Chinese museums have a hard time competing with the Forbidden Garden.

It's not a matter of who has the better attraction, but because of the accessibility. China has strict, and oftentimes unjustifiable travel policies (hey, it's their country. They have their own rules they follow.) that make it very hard, even for the Chinese themselves, to visit the Forbidden temple, the grave of Shi Huang Di, and many others. It's cheaper to travel to America and just see the replica, even if you come from China, is what I have heard.

The attraction cost 2 million dollars overall, and has a complete repertoire of an 'authentic courtyard', koi ponds, arcades, incense and the sound of a Chinese lute from faraway.

Another attraction in this area is the miniature replica of the terracotta army of Emperor Qin. If you've been watching a lot of spy movies and that particular Tomb Raider movie, you'd know what they are. They have at least 6000, as far as they say, but it's not impossible to see. The sheer volume of the statues would leave you with no taste to count. Up in the front, a large emperor statue commands the unmovable army.

This is a good chance for tourists to try and have a taste of little China in the big States. It is a very unique attraction in Texas, one that should not be passed up if you are in town.

Onions in Good Ol' Texas

Onions are god's gift to mankind. Well, for me anyway.

Almost all day, I encounter onions in my plate. Red onions, sweet onions, white onions, giant onions, baby onions...the list goes on. But even then, I can not claim that I am an onion expert. My love for these bulbs far outweigh the knowledge I have for them. Nor my skills for preparing them into good food.

Onions are one of Texas' leading crops bringing in more than $100 million each year to the Lone Star state. With the income and other industries dependent on this prized crop, the onion industry is expected to rake in more than $400 million this year. That is how big the onions are in this state. Onions are one force to be reckoned with. A running urban legend is that Texans eat onions like how we eat apples. A very, very weird thought.

Probably the most famous of sweet onions (and also one of my favorites) is the Texan Sweet Onion 'Grano 502'. Housewives don't know the name, but they sure as heck would recognize the bulb immediately when they see it. Grano 502 is large, sweet and very meaty in onion standards. It's very appealing to its patrons and to the untrained eye.

The onion industry is naught of its problems, however. The unstable market for these bulbs often leave its producers in a confusing state. Most newbies destroyed the industry with their untimely introduction to the market. If one dares to venture the onion market, one must learn the ropes and tricks of the industry of the market.

Unless you're highly interested in growing onions than eating them, good luck. I would rather have myself a plate of steak topped with onions, chowder with onions, and onion chips by the side. Just kidding. But onions do have a very high medicinal value, and is quite good for the body.

Just keep it away from your eyes when chopping.

Staking Fruit Trees

Thus the roots may be quite happy down below and the branches equally happy up above, but at the collar-as it is called-of the tree there is death because of a 2-inch depth of water in the cone which collects there and remains there during the whole of the winter -being fed from time to time by snow or rain. This collar of water keeps out the air, and thus the wood dies.

Growing plants from bulbs

A good bulb already carries its flower or flowers, neatly, sweetly and safely tucked away inside it, all ready to emerge given the right stimulus. For the first time that one reason why we love bulb flowers so much may well be that a bulb is like a pregnant woman, containing inside itself a tiny embryo perfect in every detail, safe and cozy, linked to and nourished by the parent.

Ideally they should be plunged in the coolest place in the garden, the bowls covered with ashes or peat. This is not always possible and they may have to be kept indoors, in which case select the coolest possible spot, which must also be dark.

The most frequently seen bulbs of this nature are hyacinths, one or two varieties of narcissi and hippeastrum or amaryllis. The hyacinths usually arrive first, usually early in September, followed by narcissi and the hippeastrums do not arrive until November.

Immediately the bulbs are received the packages should be opened to allow the bulbs to breathe. Bowls and bulb fibre should be ready for them. First spread a few nuggets of charcoal on the floor of the bowls and then fill them to within half an inch or so of the rim with your fibre.

The hyacinths and narcissi can be planted in the same way. Plant as many in each bowl as will be accommodated comfortably without the bulbs actually touching. If the bowl is deep one layer of narcissi can be planted above the other, always allowing space for the lower bulbs to grow through, of course. Plant hyacinths with just the neck of the bulb showing above the bulb fibre.

This fibre must be moist but not wet. Wet it thoroughly in a bucket and then drain it so that a handful squeezed will hold together in a ball but no moisture will fall from the squeezing.

How to Plan Your Fruit Tree Garden

I have two gardens. Garden No. 1 is 68 feet long by 48 feet wide. It contains two blackberries, four redcurrants, four gooseberries grown as bushes and six grown as triple cordons. There are two loganberries, three half-standard plums, one damson, three rows of apple cordons and two rows of pear cordons.

The cordons are trained at an angle of 45 degrees and are supported on a system of posts and wires. Some blackcurrant bushes are planted 'near the plums because these two fruits like similar manuring, i.e. high nitrogen. Further, of course,. they act as an intercrop.

You will see that my the second garden have apples and pears that are grown as !dwarf pyramids. This saves any posts and wires and. is a delightful way of growing fruit. The apples, being on the Mailing 1X stock, may need a little support. The two fences in this garden are used for supporting fruit; one carries a row of raspberries, and the other a line of `11' cordon gooseberries and redcurrants. There are plums, as in the first garden, with a row of blackcurrants near by and in between.

The third garden is probably the easiest one to keep up. There are no plums at all and the apples are planted as bush trees 8 feet square. The pears are grown as cordons along the bottom fence, and the raspberries along the side fence as in Garden 2.

I planted my orchard on a hillside some 350 feet high, in the midst of a fairly open plain, with the result that the trees never suffered from air frosts. Because they were on a hill, they were certainly checked by gales and sometimes the very cold winds did not encourage the visits of pollinating insects. There was always, however, the perfect draining of freezing air down to lower levels and eventually over the road to the neighbouring fields which were at a lower level still.

The soil in his garden was only about 1 foot 9 inches deep over chalk, and yet he grew a very wide range of varieties.

If your violin has been strung too tightly, expect its neck to warp eventually. This leads to a certainty whereby the whole violin will be damaged and is quite often an irretrievable situation. Short of replacing it with a new one, you would then have to spend more money repairing it.

Changing a violin bridge might sound difficult but it really is not. You can do it yourself. The difficulty in the beginning can be moderated by getting someone with a little bit of experience to guide you.

All violin repairs have to be done with tenderness and extra care since they are made of wood, which is a brittle material. Any further dents or chips that might be left during a repair on other parts might leave it worse than before. Some repairs might be cheaper to do on your own, but why not prevent further costs down the road by leaving the more serious issues for the trained professionals?

Grafting Apple Tree Techniques

At the actual time of grafting the bud should be cut from the young wood in such a way that it produces a semicircular shield, inch in length.

These must be melted together and stirred into one another, and the wax should then be used while warm. You can use ordinary candle-grease with success. The wax is needed to cover all the cut surfaces and to seal up the union of the stock and scion.

A wax should never be applied so hot as to damage the bark or to allow the thinned liquid to trickle in between the two cut surfaces. This would prevent the cambium layers from uniting.

If, however, the shield of bark is cut fairly thinly, there is no need to remove this slither of wood. Now prepare the stock by removing all the young side-growths that may have developed, from the.ground up to within 6 inches of soil level, but not above.

With the sharp blade of a knife, make a T-shaped cut in the stock on the shady side, at about 2 inches above ground level. Make the downstroke of the 'T' 1 inch long and the cross stroke I- inch long. With the bone wedge-shaped handle of the knife, raise the bark slightly.

The buds are not cut out of these young growths until they are actually used, but the laterals are cut off the main branches an hour or two before they are required and they are stood 3 inches deep in a container of water to keep them fresh.

Planting Fruit Trees

In the case of the top fruits-apples, pears, plums, cherries, etc., it is necessary to dig a hole about 3 feet across and about 8 inches deep. Such a hole should be of sufficient size to take all the roots. These are bound to have been damaged when they were dug up from the nursery and the jagged tear or break found at the ends of the bigger roots must be trimmed back with a sharp knife or a pair of scissors. As the result of this careful pruning, it should be possible to fit the roots into the sized hole.

This will annoy him because he will start to dig up his trees as soon as the leaves have fallen an.d he will have to go on getting them up and despatching them until early April. He cannot possibly get up all his orders in one week.

Fortunately today there are Family Trees, which bear a number of varieties, and so the beginner with a small garden can plant one tree and yet be assured of having succession in picking and eating; and the right pollinators so that the flowers of the varieties he is growing will `set' without any difficulty. It pays to plant fruits that are easy to grow and that give a good return on the capital invested.

If the trees can be planted in November, then they get a chance of establishing themselves before the hard winter sets in. If you do have to take delivery by train, then do unpack the bundles of straw the moment they arrive, for British Railways seem to have a penchant for breeding mice, and these get into the bales and nibble the bark of the trees.

So unpack the bales and, if you can, get out a trench and bury the roots in soil until you can actually handle each tree and plant them where they are to grow.

Some people have told me that they couldn't possibly heel in the trees when they arrived, because the land was too frozen. Such people didn't know the 'trick of covering a small plot of soil with straw a foot deep or so, so that however strong the frost the particular area of land never gets frozen. Thus the roots can be protected once they are buried and they can remain there quite happily until planting time comes. It is usual, incidentally, to do the heeling in at an angle of about 45 degrees.

Houseplant Soil Tips

It is perfectly possible for the house plant enthusiast to make his own potting compost from this recipe, but it can be a lengthy and somewhat fiddling process and as ready-made composts can be bought in 3 or 7 lb. bags quite cheaply it is not recommended.

This bacterial activity breaks down the soil into the necessary chemicals which the plant roots can absorb. So with the addition of humus our soils come to life and soil should be a very live substance. Uncultivated soil, whether it be woodland or meadow, is normally sufficiently supplied with humus for its needs because of the dropping of leaves, the rotting of vegetable matter such as tree trunks and grass, the degeneration of wild life of all forms and the droppings of animal manures.

If the pot is terracotta it probably has a central hole in the base and if plastic it probably has a series of smaller holes. The terracotta pot will need ' crocking ', which means that the hole at the base will need to be covered with a little piece of broken crock or flower pot or by a crocking disc, a disc of perforated zinc. This is to prevent soil being washed down through the hole when watering. The smaller holes of plastic pots do not need this.

This is why gardeners make compost, import farmyard manure, peat, spent hops and other similar bulky organic matter that will rot down to make the humus that the soil must have if it is to be alive and active. Or maybe the crowd isn't into that whole dancing thing. What to do? It's not that hard. There are a myriad of activities you can plan that will not only engage and entertain the guests, but also help them get to know each other and - most importantly - the bride and groom just a little bit better.

Here's one that's fun and might remind you just a little bit of a football game. Make a placard for apiece guest. On one side, letter "Bride" and on the other, "Groom". Someone, and if you have a DJ it can be him or her, or the best man or maid of honor, asks a series of questions. They might be simple, like "who was born in New York City"? Or they might be more complicated, such as "who, at 6, broke their leg when they were playing with their German shepherd puppy"?

Guests don't yell their answer, but rather show their placard, turning it to the "bride" side of they think the question pertains to the bride or to the "groom" side if it's the opposite. The guests' guesses can be revealing, but even more revealing, are the true answers. It's a great, fun way for everyone to get to know a little more about the bride and groom. One word of caution about the above activity: Keep ex-boyfriends and ex-girlfriends out of the questions and don't ask anything that might be a little too revealing or too risque.

He's given a piece of food and then spun around a few times so he's a little bit dizzy. Guided only by the helpful words of his new bride, he has to find her and get the piece of food into her mouth. Be sure to have the wedding party shadowing him so there are no accidents. Once the groom has fed his new wife, the tables are turned and she is blindfolded and must find him. A few notes about this activity: when feeding the bride, don't use wedding cake or a piece of bread with dip. In other words, don't use anything too messy. If the groom has a hard time finding her mouth, he might likely smear the food on the bride's face and that is something that won't make a bride - prettily made up just hours before - too happy.

Biofuel is tagged the 'fuel of the future'.

Basically, all fuel with added organic components that do not belong to the category of 'long dead, prehistoric biological material' are considered. There are many types of biofuels, though most of them are still deemed too expensive and inefficient. The two most current profitable and feasible are the generic 'biofuels' and 'agrofuels'.

Biofuel is usually derived from 'biomass' a big heap of material from recently living (and now dead) organisms, usually plant life after harvesting. Animal refuse (like manure, slaughterhouse parts) can also be used and added to the biomass gunk. It usually consists of animal waste, construction materials, leaves and tree refuse, and crop stalks (usually wheat, oats, and rice stalks).

Agrofuels are basically specialized plants whose produce has a good composition that could be assimilated into a pseudo-fuel source. Usually, these plants have to have a very high sugar content (like sugar cane, beet, and sorghum) or starch (sweet potatoes and corn do fine) and have yeast extract the alcohol. The other one is to have plants that create high amounts of oil that can be used to support the main fuel (like palm, soy, jatropha which is fast becoming the crop of choice for oils among biofuels.) Sooner or later, these plants may be raised and cultured just for this purpose.

We have vegetable oil, used in its distilled form (void of water and particulates) that is used by older diesel engines, as they are most compatible with the engine. Biodiesel which is produced from oil and is chemically similar to diesel. The oils are used to replace a part of the fuel. Bioalcohols are of the same value, except instead of oil, they use alcohols.

Indiana is the proponent of most of the biofuels in the country. With this move, hopefully, the state will become the leader in the green revolution.

1. We have to be honest with ourselves. Not everyone will become a famous musician despite all the hard work we might put in. Do not fall into this trap and always spend time to perfect how to hold the violin, the bow and other techniques like proper chin rest posture.

4. Try to avoid looking for short cuts in achieving results or breakthroughs. There is no quick way to being a master of the instrument. Other schools of thought that promote things like placing markers on the violin neck to memorize where to press the strings will lead you to developing a crutch in terms of learning. The fruits of success will be sweeter if you do things the right way.

5. Learn to maintain your violin and related accessories. A violin that is free from mechanical problems will mean you are free from concerns over repair, which take away valuable practice time. You will also be able to benefit from quality tones that will breed a good ear.

6. When the going gets tough, the tough get going. The same applies to becoming proficient in any instrument. Always retain your self belief and be positive about the results you will eventually get after hours of practice and determination. The violin can be tough to learn, but once you have done so the rewards are beautiful.

The population of Spain doubled during the twentieth century due to the spectacular demographic boom in the 1960s and early 1970s. In emigration/immigration terms and after centuries of net emigration, Spain has recently experienced large-scale immigration for the first time in modern history. According to the Spanish government, there were 4,145,000 foreign residents in Spain in January 2007. Of these, well over half a million were Moroccan while the Ecuadorians figure was around half a million as well. Romanian and Colombian populations amounted to around 300,000 each. There are also a significant number of British (274,000 as of 2006) and German (133,588) citizens, mainly in Alicante, Mlaga provinces, Balearic Islands and Canary Islands. Chinese in Spain are estimated to number between 10 to 60,000, and South East Asian groups such as Filipinos -whose country was a former Spanish possession- created a small community in Spain. Immigrants from several sub-Saharan African countries have also settled in Spain as contract workers, although they represent only 4.08% of all the foreign residents in the country.

During the early twenty first century, the average year-on-year demographic growth set a new record with its 2003 peak variation of 2.1%, doubling the previous record reached back in the 1960s when a mean year on year growth of 1% was experienced. This trend is far from being reversed at the present moment and, in 2005 alone, the immigrant population of Spain increased by 700 000 people.

Spain currently has the second highest immigration rates within the EU, just after Cyprus, and the second highest absolute net migration in the World (after the USA). This can be explained by a number of reasons including its geographical position, the porosity of its borders, the large size of its submerged economy and the strength of the agricultural and construction sectors which demand more low cost labour than can be offered by the national workforce. In fact, booming Spain was Europe's largest absorber of migrants from 2002 to 2007, with its immigrant population more than doubling as 2.5 million people arrived.

Immigrants from the European Union make up a growing proportion of immigrants in Spain. They mainly come from countries like Romania, the United Kingdom, and Germany, but the British case is of especial relevance due to its magnitude. The British authorities estimate that the real population of UK and Canadian citizens who move to Spain from Canada or are living in Spain is much bigger than Spanish official figures suggest, establishing them at about 1,000,000, about 800,000 being permanent residents.

Boat Evaluation Before That Sale, In Ten Stages

Boat evaluation may seem like a daunting task for the uninitiated, but it's actually not impossible if you follow a couple of easy guidelines. Besides having a general idea of the value of a certain class of boat, there are a series of points that are more important than others. Here they are, summed up in a Decalogue:

1) Start with the boat hull and understructure. Are there any scrapes, cracks, signs of badly executed repairs, or fading? All these will negatively impact the boat value. Please note that the hull is best examined with the boat out of the water.

2) Next, look at hatches and fittings on the superstructure. Ideally, everything should fit well, be watertight, in good condition and not warped by dampness. Any exceptions to this warrant a discount on the total price.

3) Check engine(s), steering & transmission: Check that the steering and throttle control cables are in good condition and that the wheel moves freely (and without squeaking) and that the transmission smooth, from forward, to neutral, to reverse. Check the oil level of the engine and examine the colour and texture of the oil. If it's grainy or gritty, they're possibly tiny slivers of metal that indicate potentially serious mechanical problems. If the oil has a slightly milky appearance, it signifies that there is a water leak into the engine.

4) Check the radio as well as all the electrical equipment, the batteries, and all switches. Make sure that everything works and is in good order, and that there is no excessive wear and tear.

5) Have a look at all the bilges, under the flooring. Oil signs are a bad sign, you don't want any oil leaks. Watermarks from flooding are sign of a lesser problem. You will want to enquire with the current owner when the flooding happened and why.

6) Now revisit all the external surfaces, from the deck to the inner furnishings, and also all the upholstery. Are there any problems that may result in a lower value of the boat? What is the status of repair of all these items?

7) What condition is the woodwork in? You should especially be on the outlook for any damp spots; in general these are darker than the surrounding wood and will be soft to touch. Do also check for warped, chipped and loose woodwork.

8) If the boat you are evaluating is a sailing yacht, check the sails and rigging. Everything should be in good condition, including the spares. Unfold and unfurl everything. If any repairs have been made on the sails, check their quality.

9) What accessories will be part of the deal? Make sure to make an inventory of all the extras, and evaluate them to their fair used material price. This could make a serious difference to end value, especially if a lot of electronics are part of the deal.

10) What about the safety equipment? If any is include, don't only determine its value but use it also as an indication of the general state of the boat, as people who keep their boat well usually have safety equipment in top condition.

Propagating Cranberry Tree

Vines are usually propagated by cuttings, but it is particularly important to sterilize these before striking them if they come from the Continent. They should be soaked in water at 130 F. for one minute, and then should be put for another minute in cold water to cool down. This is done to kill the tiny eggs of the Phylloxera aphis which has not as yet got established in Great Britain, and is a terrible pest on the Continent.

Cuttings should be 12 inches long, and must be made of the wood of the previous year's growth, which should be hard and well-ripened. All the buds except the upper two should be removed: a cut should then be made just below a bud at the base of the cutting and another cut at an angle of 45 degrees just above a bud at the top of the cutting.

It is safer to propagate vegetation in this way, for plants raised from seeds are not necessarily true to type. Some plants produce offshoots at their base which can be severed from the parent plants in the autumn for planting out separately.

Cobnuts and filberts are usually grown on their own roots and the propagation is done by layering the two-year-old wood in the autumn.

Fig does perfectly well on its own roots. Cuttings of one-year-old wood should be made, 6 inches long, early in August. Such cuttings should be inserted in a compost consisting of 50 per cent fine sedge peat and 50 per cent coarse silver river sand. The compost should be placed in a frame, thoroughly moistened, and the cutting should be inserted 3 inches deep after all the lower leaves have been removed. The Dutch light should then be put on the frame, and this should be kept in position until the cutting has struck in. about a month or six weeks' time. Water will have to be given day by day, and a light shading applied if the sun is hot.

The nurseryman usually grafts his medlar on to the Quince C stock if he wants a dwarf tree, a wild pear stock if he needs a standard tree, and a white thorn stock if the tree is to be planted in a very dry spot. Medlar trees are usually grafted, and I am told that some nurserymen adopt cleft-grafting methods.

How to Protect Your Fruit Trees

Even when trees are heeled in, the moment they arrive on the fruit farm they should be protected with a ring of wire netting around them. Hares have been and are still as great a nuisance in young orchards.

The alternative to the strip of wire netting put around each individual tree is the use of one of the special liquid substances, which can be painted on to the trunks of the young trees late in November or early in December. One of the best of these is Colophene, which is much used in the Wisbech district.

It is applied with a brush and doesn't need warming. It is usually painted on to the stems of the trees up to the height of, say, 3 or 4 feet, and the Wisbech fruit growers claim that the use of wire netting is too expensive and too slow. The danger of these proprietary repellents is that they may have the effect of preventing the young trees from developing properly.

Furthermore, it is advisable to delay the pruning of gooseberries until the spring, so as to leave the bushes nice and thick and to prevent the normal feathered friends from having it easy. (Some people use a trace of good tacky banding material, when heated, painted over the buds.)

In town gardens where there are only a few trees and where there may be invasions of birds from other gardens round about, it is possible in early December and again in early February, to spray the trees all over with a strong solution of 'Bitter Apples', which may be obtained under this name from the local chemist.

The solution be as strong as possible. The idea, of course, is to make the buds bitter and therefore unpalatable to birds. I have used a strong solution of alum for this purpose, but it has not proved so successful.

Dendrochilums are evergreen epiphytic orchids, which come from the continent of Asia, but are also found in the Philippines and New Guinea. Of the 120 or so species, wry few are generally grown, and there appear to be no hybrids. The rarity in cultivation reflects the plants' scarcity in the wild, and it is possible that they have never been that abundant.

The plants are neat, with evergreen pseudo bulbs and a single, narrow, oval leaf, seldom reaching more than 25 cm tall. The slender flower spikes come from the base of the new growth, and most are autumn-flowering. When grown on into large specimen plants, their sight and fragrance is not something to be forgotten, for these are among the prettiest of little orchid flowers.

Do not be tempted to divide these orchids until absolutely necessary. The larger the plant, the better they look. The common name for these delightful, modestly sized orchids is silver chain orchids, or in some instances golden chain orchids. This refers to the slender flower spike, which is densely packed with small, white or yellow flowers, arranged in two distinct rows along most of its length. Temperature for the orchid is cool-growing.

Grow in pots or hanging baskets of fine bark compost (growing medium). Provide shady conditions when ill growth, but full light during the winter. Water all year, but give much less during the winter while the plants are resting. Feed only in summer, at every other watering. Height is 23cm (9 in).

Dendrochilum cobbianum is a sweetly scented, cool-growing species from the Philippines, which grows to about 30cm (12 in) tall, carries hundreds of small, white flowers on drooping spikes. It blooms in early summer and is suitable for indoor or greenhouse culture.

Jumellia sagittata is a robust-growing species from Madagascar, this produces Vanda-like growth. The flowers, 4cm wide, are carried singly on spindly spikes that are shorter than the height of the plant. A profusion of blooms crowds around the base in winter.

So in the garden room or home extension we shall be wise not to dot our plants about the place as we do in the home proper, but to group them in concentrated colonies for the good of their health.

However, we can, and indeed we should, spray all plants thoroughly at least once a day under these circumstances, keeping the fine moisture only off such delicate plants as saintpaulias, or preferably (since they do not require these special conditions) keep these delicate plants in the cooler and less lighted portions of the home. Aided by the fine film of moisture on their surfaces leaves will transpire at a lower rate than if too dry and the plants should not normally suffer.

But respiration rates are bound to be high, and unless spraying can be resorted to several times during a hot clay these rates will outstrip the speed with which plants can absorb moisture at their roots.

On the large scale it is possible to devote the major part of a single wall to a stepped display of plants. If a stepped rack is constructed it can hold whole banks of flowers and at the same time provide an excellent hiding place for the necessary bucket, watering can, fertilizer bottle or pack, even the dust-pan and brush.

This is a good thing when the person cares about you enough to recognise the important things to you. They then use their influence to make you a better person. Often though, people have their own agenda and will use their influence to build on their own ideals and values, rather than recognising you are a different person with a different perspective on life.

Culture and religion can be very influential here. Both culture and religion are a framework, or a set of rules, within which its members live their lives. There is often very little room for compromise with these rules. If you do not abide by them, you are not a practising member of that faith/culture. So if you date someone who lives within these structures, the influence and opinion they bring to your life will invariably be tempered by the rules of their faith.

The main conflict this has with dating, is with partners who have not been brought up in the same culture or religion. Dating and relationships require understanding and compromise. Religions and culture tend not to, inasmuch as living your life by their set of rules is concerned, allow room for compromise.

When I point this out, don't take it the wrong way. I'm not saying religion and culture are good or bad. I'm not saying religious or cultural people are right or wrong for you. All I am saying is that rigid beliefs and ideals can impact the development of a relationship and you should be aware of it.

Asian culture for example is very different to western culture. If Asian culture is important to you, one of the easiest ways to ensure you continue to live under its constructs is to surround yourself with like minded people. Every swept floor invites another sweep. Each child bathed invites another bathing. Every lawn mowed requires another mowing. Every breath taken requires another breath.

The sun rises each morning and sets each evening. The moon shines each night. Tides ebb and flow every day. Birds sing perfect songs today and sing them again tomorrow.

Oysters open their shells when the moon is high in the heavens. The chambered nautilus creates a new chamber in its spiraled shell each lunar month.

When we breathe, we do not stop breathing because we have taken in all of the oxygen we will ever need. We stop breathing because we have taken all the oxygen we need for that particular breath.

When we exhale we stop exhaling in order to prepare for the next breath. We will need to repeat the process, however, no matter how perfectly we have inhaled and exhaled.

What these examples are showing us is what is finished invites refinishing.

So what do we do after we become enlightened? We become more enlightened. When we are consciously one with the Infinite Isness there is a tendency to think we are finished, that we are complete, that we have reached the pinnacle of our perfection.

But nothing could be further from the truth. There is a Zen koan which goes like this: Before enlightenment, mountains are mountains and rivers are rivers. At the instant one is enlightened, mountains are no longer mountains and rivers are no longer rivers. After enlightenment, mountains are again mountains and rivers are again rivers.

A current version of this Zen saying comes from Unity minister, Jim Rosemergy who reminds us, "Mystics do not denounce the world once they turn to God. They remain in the world but not of the world. Even mystics have bills to pay."

Once we are enlightened, that is, when we positively, absolutely, without a doubt realize we are the Christ expressing at the point of us, we remain in the world, but not of the world to show others the way to enlightenment.

That is our Great Commission: to fully express our Christ potential and help others to do the same. It is the same commission expressed in Matthew 28:19-20.

I will share the New Revised Standard Version and then sprinkle an ontological interpretation from the New Metaphysical Version of Matthew to add spiritual depth.

After His resurrection Jesus told His disciples in verse 19:

"Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit."

Metaphysically Jesus was referring to three specific nations: our body, mind, and soul. Baptizing the nations means cleansing our body, mind, and soul from unhealthy material attachments.

We are to accomplish this 'in the 'name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.' Name means 'in the nature of.' And, ontologically speaking Father, Son, and Holy Spirit refer to the three aspects of Divine Order (Mind, Idea, Expression).

So, we are to cleanse our body, mind, and soul by becoming one with the nature of the Christ Presence within us so we can divinely order our experience.

Matthew 20 says in the New Revised Standard Version: " Teach them to obey everything I have commanded you, remembering that I am with you always, even to the end of the world."

Metaphysically 'teach them' means to walk our talk with integrity. 'I am with you always' means we have an indivisible, unshakable, divine connection with Spirit. To the 'end of the world' means from one level of consciousness to another.

Matthew 20 means we are to walk our talk by letting our Christ Light shine as we move from one level of enlightenment, one level of refinishing to another. So, what's next after we enlightenment?

We are in the world but not of the world. We live as monks and mystics in cities, towns, and communities. We light up the world by our example. Like the enlightened ones who became enlightened before us we will teach others how to teach others.

We will resemble typical men and women, but our values and the way we live, move, and have our being will demonstrate our surrender to our higher calling.

We will have human challenges, but we will not be limited by them. We may wear glasses or contacts, hearing aids, or pace makers, but we will not be defined by them.

We may use medications or require hospitalization, but we will not be diminished by them. We may find ourselves in a world that is not perfect, but we will not be limited by that imperfection.

We will be in the finishing and refinishing business. We will pot and repot ourselves daily. We will renew and continue to renew ourselves. We will tool and re-tool ourselves constantly.

We will continue to seek enlightenment because enlightenment is a verb, not a noun. It is a process, an unfolding, a movement from one exhilarating cusp of consciousness to another.

If therefore the spread of the roots of a fruit tree is three times that of the spread of the branches and more, then those who aim to manage soil properly must give each enormous root system favourable conditions. One of the chief functions of soil is to absorb water, and in Great Britain we get far more rain in a winter than trees can possibly use, and generally speaking in the summer much less rain than is needed.

A shallow sandy soil cannot hold sufficient water, but a really deep loamy soil which has been regularly fed with organic matter, will be able to retain more adequate reserves of moisture for the plants in the summer. It is the roots which collect the water and pass it up. They must therefore never be allowed to be killed in the winter by drowning.

Propagating Houseplants by Leaf Cuttings

As might be expected, most plants suited to this method of propagation have comparatively soft and fleshy leaves. There are two types of leaf cuttings : those that make use of leaf and stem and those requiring the leaf alone. An example of the first is the dainty African violet and of the second, the gorgeous Begonia Rex.

Again make use of a standard rooting compost medium as described earlier, although plain moist sand and sometimes even water alone can frequently be used. For a leaf and stem cutting remove the mature leaf from the plant together with two inches or so of stem. Insert the stem end in the rooting medium almost to the base of the leaf and new roots will grow from the base of the stem in anything from one to two months. If using water alone, either choose a narrow-necked phial or bottle to enable the leaf to stand upright while the, stem is in the medium. One frequently used method is to cover the flower pot or other container with kitchen foil or plastic and punch small holes in this to allow the stern to go through into the medium safely.

A considerably more artificial derivation of the layering process is known as air layering. It is particularly useful for the following reason. Many plants such as the rubber plant gradually lose their lower leaves so we are left with a long, naked stem with a tuft of foliage at the top. This is both hideous and a demonstration of our inability to grow the plant properly. If we can take the tuft at the top and make a new plant from it, then we can begin again.

Actually it is possible merely to cut off the green and growing tuft at the top of the plant and to strike this as a cutting, but high soil temperatures and humidity are required, so we can use instead the following simpler method.

Three or four inches below the tuft, that is below the lowest leaf, cut a strip of bark about half an inch wide from the circumference of the stem. Do this gently and with a sharp knife, removing the outer bark only. The stem will exude a sticky liquid, actually the rubber. This is poisonous, so do not allow your sticky fingers to come into contact with your mouth. Into this sticky liquid sprinkle a little hormone rooting powder and then cover the entire area for about an inch or two above and below the cut with moist sphagnum moss, tying it around the stem with string. Around the moss tie a piece of plastic sheeting, tying it tightly at top and bottom so that as little as possible of the moisture in the moss can evaporate. New roots will grow into the moss and after a month or two they will actually be visible through the plastic and their results will be seen in new growth from the top tuft.

The new plant (for that is what it is) can then be cut away from the naked stem below and potted up in the usual manner.

SPEED RACER: An anime-cartoon evolves. Much like The Flinstones, Speed Racer was a TV cartoon that was turned into a feature film with actors. Speed Racer is a young man who loves racing. His goal is to win The Crucible, a major rally car race that had taken the life of his older brother. With odds against him, and his families business at stake, he joins forces with his enemy of the past, Racer X, in an effort to capture the championship, and save the family business.

Help Is On The Way!

The U.S. is going through a huge financial crisis that touches everyone in the country in some way. The stress of financial uncertainty and vulnerability can be more than many people can bear. At times like this, it is easy to feel overwhelmed and think that no one else could ever understand the hardships you are suffering. Fortunately, comfort is close at hand.

While you may be suffering now, there is always someone who understandsJesus. In His life on Earth, He faced unimaginable trials. He was wrongfully called an immoral person and a drunk by people who had a false impression of Him. He was accused of having evil motives when He cast out demons. He was surrounded by scribes and Pharisees who wanted to see Him fail. He was betrayed by people He loved who refused to listen to Him and wanted nothing to do with Him, yet He continued to love them. He experienced the painful loss of loved ones during His life. Most importantly, Jesus endured the most difficult trial ever faced when He, as a Holy sinless God, became sin for us.

He completely understands our human fear and frustration because He has experienced it Himself, just as we do. He knows what it's like to try your best to work hard and do the right things in life, yet be "rewarded" with nothing but suffering. He can help you endure your personal trials and come out on the other side of suffering as a wiser and stronger person. After enduring the suffering of the cross, Jesus rose from the dead, having paid the price for our sin, and sits at the right hand of the Father as our Lord and Savior!

It is important to know that during life's trials, we can become weak and more vulnerable to the temptation of taking the easy way out and making poor decisions. It's perfectly natural that when things aren't going our way, we get angry, frustrated, and scared. We can easily become defensive and begin to think that our personal trials are far more difficult than anyone else's trials. As despair sets in, we feel overcome and even more susceptible to temptation. Instead of giving in, we must stop focusing on ourselves, and instead look to and identify with the cross and follow Jesus.

Our human tendency is to worry and question why we are in despair. Instead, by turning to Jesus and asking Him for support and guidance, you can stay on a path that will reward you with a life of peace and sanity. If you have recognized that all have sinned against God, yourself included, and you have repented of your sin and trusted Jesus as Lord, He is always faithful and will never leave your side. You can take comfort in knowing that you have the best support you could ever want with you at all times. He loves you and doesn't want you to suffer through your trials alone. He will travel through life's wilderness with you to help you endure your trials and fight the evils of temptation that can lead to more suffering. He will help you to become more refined through facing your trials to become the person God intended. We are refined and molded by God through our trials to be more like Him and this is how to experience the Joy of the Lord even as you go through the trials.

You may be facing overwhelming challenges now, but you can do something about it. If you have put your trust in Jesus, you are not helpless, and you are not alone. Remember how much you are loved and that you have constant access to that love and support. Additionally, with Jesus in control as you go through your trials, your burden will be lighter because you are no longer carrying it alone. If you haven't trusted Jesus as Lord, there is no time like the present! Do yourself a favor and give the Lord a chance to heal your pain and weather your trials with you.
