SPEED RACER: The 1990's television cartoon with a new twist. Much like the movie The Flinstones, Speed Racer is an animation changed to a movie with an actual cast. Speed Racer is a young man who loves racing. His goal is to win The Crucible, a big race that his older brother lost his live in. With odds against him, and his families business at stake, he surprisingly teams up with his old rival Racer X, in an effort to capture the championship, so the family business won't go under.

With $3 million on the line, they each try to get the other to give up, as both desire to get the money for themselves.

HAMLET 2: Failed actor Mr. Marshz has found himself teaching theater classes at the high school to uninterested students. When they lose a building at the campus, the school administation feels that the useless theater coarses must be eliminated. With a challenge now in front of him, he sets out to save the theater classes by producing Hamlet 2, a sequel to the original work, which he creates.

TROPIC THUNDER: With a collection of acting greats this outrageous flick is a spoof on vietnam war movies. To get better results from his spoiled actors to make a true epic masterpiece, the desperate director into the middle of nowhere, leaving them to fend for themselves. The object is to overwhelm them into the realism needed for a graet war film, that will be recorded on hidden cameras. A young hunter named D'Leh, who is in love with her, organizes a band of hunters to chase down these warmongers, and save her, and the rest of the captured tribe members.

THE DARK KNIGHT: In this film Batman, along with Lieutenant Jim Gordon and District Attorney Harvey Dent, are taking the major criminals off the streets. This has effectively reduced crime, until a new criminal mastermind shows up, and attacks the city. Batman has his work cut out him now, as the Joker is dispensing an overwhelming assault on Gotham City.

Jumper: While almost drowning, David Rice (Hayden Christensen) learns he has an unbelievable ability. He has the ability to actually teleport himself to any place he wants to go, at any time. Eventually, he discovers that he is not alone in having this capability. After years of "jumping" around the planet, he is exposed to hunters that think jumpers are a threat, and need to be eliminated. He must fight for his life, as these paladins try to track him down.

GET SMART: Maxwell Smart (agent 86) is at it again, "and loving it". KAOS vs CONTROL, agents hidden in plants, and all the great one liners. This is a modern day version that looks back at the antics of Maxwell Smart.

BOLT: Bolt: This film is an animated comedy. Bolt, is a dog who is an actor, who in his role on television, is a super hero dog. His problem is that he honestly believes he is this super hero dog with superpowers. When, by chance, he is finds himself in a real world situation, he discovers that he is just a dog. Needing to find his way home, he is aided by a cat named Mittens, and an overweight hampster named Rhino.

STEP BROTHERS: When two child like older men, who both live at home with one parent, find themselves having to share a room because their mom and dad get married, you have one crazy situation. Having the combination of Reilly and Ferrell as the key players, and the table is set for a very fun film. This film is a sure fire bet for a good laugh in 2008.

As fate would have it, when he arrives at his hotel, he runs into Sarah and her new boyfriend, who is a mega rock star. The stage is set for a thoughtful romantic comedy.

GET SMART: Maxwell Smart, as agent 86, is here again, and he has us right where he wants us. The evil organization (KAOS) vs the good guys (CONTROL), the shoe phone, and all the classic quotes. It is worth the look back at the 1960's spy spoof series.

HAMLET 2: Unsucessful actor Dana Marshz has found himself teaching the high school theater classes to uninterested students. The school loses a building due to destruction, so the school board figures the theatre progam will have to go. With a challenge now in front of him, he hopes to keep the school from dropping his classes by producing Hamlet 2, a new version of the classic, which is his own work.

MADAGASCAR: ESCAPE 2 AFRICA: As the title suggests, this is the continuation to the highly acclaimed Madagascar. Our four animal stars want to return to the Central Park Zoo, putting an end to thier incredible adventure. With things going wrong again, thanks to those wacky Penguins again, they find themselves going to have more adventures first.

PINEAPPLE EXPRESS: Complete stoner Dale unfortunately has just viewed a bad cop, and a big time dealer, commit a murder. The killers know he has seen the killing. Realizing this, he unwittingly throws down his joint, a unique version called pineapple express, and takes off. The weed is so special, that the bad guys can. The "fun" is on, the bad guys are hunting, and Dale and dealer Saul are on the run.

ROLE MODELS: Danny and Wheeler, who sell energy drinks, might be seeing some hard jail time after trashing the company truck. The way they can avoid being locked up is by doing communuty service. Their task will be to work as mentors with difficult children as sort of a big brother. A good situation for some good laughs.

STEP BROTHERS: Two forty year old child adults, who still live with their single parents, are going to share a bedroom because their parents have wed, you have one crazy situation. Put Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly acting as these two idiots, and this has the makings for a very fun film. This movie is a sure fire bet for a good laugh in 2008.

TROPIC THUNDER: Overloded with good actors this movie is a spoof on vietnam war movies. To get better results from his spoiled actors to make a first rate war movie, the frantic, and abused, director Damien Cockburn into the wild jungle, and leaves them there by themselves. The goal is to overwhelm them so they will produce a work of genius, which will be caught on hidden cameras in the area. When the director dies unexpectadly by stepping on a real land mine, the actors are now truely on their own, and they start acting, thinking it's a big set, but the bullets flying are actually real. Great cast with incredible make up for Robert Downey Jr.and Tom Cruise.

ZACK AND MIRI MAKE A PORNO: The bills aren't getting paid and Zack and Miri, roomates and good friends, need to make some money. Their solution? Easy, start making pornos. As one can expect this seems like a good recipe for a funny film.

The pruning instrument consists of a long rod with a hook at the top into which slides a sharp-cutting blade. From the end of this blade there runs a strong wire down to the iron bar on the handle to the base of the pruner.

The curved end is then hooked over the branch with the knife-blade full open and the handle up. The handle is then pulled down, the knife-blade passed through the branch, cutting it sharply and ends up in the slot provided for it in the hook. The branch thus falls to the ground, having been cut off neatly at the desired spot.

At the base of the hand pump is a long rubber tube, the end of which is placed into a bucket. At this end there is a special brass filter with a ball valve, thus making the double pumping action effective.

Ten-foot pruners are very tiring to use and those 6 or 7 feet in length are extremely useful and are not difficult to manipulate.

For Stub grafting pieces of one-year-old healthy wood, about six buds long, are then prepared with the base cut into the shape of a wedge. The lateral branch to be grafted is then cut on its upper side, starting inch away from the main branch and extending to the base almost as far as the centre of the lateral shoot.

You then bend down the cut lateral causing the cut to open up and the wedged-shaped scion is then inserted in the opening.

A two-by-two crossbar should then be nailed on to the top of the stakes, and one of the modern plastic ties should then be lapped round the tree and then strapped on to the stakes. The rubber extension piece should be used as a buffer between the stem and the crossbar.

An upside down 'T'-shaped cut is then made in the healthy bark above the wound and a T-shaped cut made in the bark below the wound. The two ends of the grafts are then pushed into their respective T-shaped cuts with the buds the right way up. The cuts are then tightly wound round with raffia, and are painted over with grafting wax.

A cut is then made into the side of the branch at an angle of about 20 degrees and to a depth of about a quarter of the diameter of the branch itself. This cut is then opened up by bending the branch slightly and the wedge-like end of the scion is then inserted.

They say that this fixes the graft more securely. Grafting wax, of course, has to be used afterwards, as in the case of raffia.

Most fruit growers agree that trees and bushes should be sprayed with a tar-oil wash in December for it is almost impossible to control aphids in the spring and summer unless this is done. Some omit the tar-oil application every fourth or fifth year in order not to overemphasize the insecticidal control. They then watch carefully that spring and spray with liquid derris or if necessary.

As far as fungus diseases are concerned, there is one which gives particular trouble to apple and pear growers known as scab. I have found little difficulty at the present time in controlling this disease by using an 'organic' fungicide known as Fuclasin or Captan. It is quite a good plan to use one of these washes-first of all when the blossoms have fallen, that is to say just as the little apples or pears are starting to form. It can then be applied again some three weeks later and possibly once more three weeks after that.

I want to say that I believe the proper approach to the orchard insect control problem, or any control problem, whether plant or animal, is through a complete ecological study of the problems involved. If insecticides are necessary to keep injurious species below the economic level, we must take the trouble to determine the overall long-range effect of the chemicals on all the factors in the environment.

In my opinion, the use of chemicals should be considered supplementary to environmental resistance. If we ignore the methods for the maintenance of population levels which nature has devised through the aeons of the past, we are treading on dangerous ground. Where man has proceeded on this basis, his actions have often been highly destructive.

It is interesting to report that there has been no case of insect resistance of any practical significance to pyrethrum so far, no matter how frequently it has been used.

Further, no poisonous deposit is accumulated and apples, pears or plums suffer no taint or off-flavor. It is harmless, in fact, like derris, to human beings and animals.

Pruning the Bush Apple Tree

Some people today therefore prefer the regulated or thinned system, which really means that the majority of laterals are not pruned back at all, while the leaders are cut back by about a quarter. When the laterals have produced fruit buds, and fruit, they usually bend down and at the bend a fruit bud will be produced lower down.

The side growths or laterals will not be cut back, with the exception of those that are in the way or that are rubbing other shoots or that may appear to be diseased. Now this is the primary work that has to be done in the case of almost all bush trees, whether they be apple, pear or plum. Furthermore, similar pruning is done to a standard tree or half-standard tree, only of course the branches start in the first case at about 4 feet, and in the second case at 5 or 6 feet.

Instead of pruning back the one-year-old tree or maiden quite hard, the grower aims at producing an erect stem with side branches growing out of it. This is in contrast with the normal bush tree, which of course has an open centre. If the maiden is not strong, he may prune it back to a height of about 3 feet, and from this pruned back stem he will train on the shoot which has formed from the top bud, to take a vertical position. Thus he continues the centre erect stem and yet ensures that the tree is quite strong.

The procedure for the second year is then repeated year after year, until the tree is about 5 feet 6 inches tall. At that stage the central shoot may be left unpruned, though, if because the season has been wet the top growth is very vigorous, then the entire shoot may be removed in the middle of May, by cutting it back to the topmost sideshoot found below it.

The whole idea is to try to get big trees formed quickly, and at the same time to ensure that the young growth is distributed well over the branches. The pruner aims to get the branches growing parallel to the ground, because, as a result, fruit buds form quicker.

Branches that are growing too low to the ground are shortened back to a growth growing upwards, and branches growing too tall are shortened also down to a side branch growing out lower down.

In the case of a neglected orchard the main plant food to give is nitrogen. Of course, it helps greatly if the soil is cultivated shallowly so that the weeds and rough grass that are growing can be worked into the top 2 or 3 inches. I found a Howard-Clifford Rotary Cultivator excellent for this purpose with the tines set quite shallowly.

In all cases, the really large saw cuts should be trimmed up smoothly with the sharp blade of a knife and should be painted over afterwards with a thick white lead paint. This is done to prevent the entry of disease.

Castor bean meal has been used at 5 cwt. to the acre and so has fish guano compound at 4 cwt. to the acre. Any of these organic nitrogenous plant foods should be used preferably in January, so that the nitrogen would be available during the season.

Be sure to use a very sharp pruning saw for all this work. You must have a saw which will cut green wood smoothly and fast. You must be sure that the bottom side of the branch is sawn through an inch or two before you tackle the upper surface. If you do not, it may easily split off due to its weight and will cause a very nasty jagged wound in consequence. See that the ladders you use during the pruning are in really good condition.

The great temptation is to do the whole of the work the first season. This may result in hundreds of strong watery growths being produced which themselves will have to be cut out the following winter. It is always better to remove completely an offending branch for the purpose of spacing, than to try and prune correctly all the crossing and rubbing small twigs and shoots. One should always aim to give sufficient clearance to allow for work to be done below.

If there are branches on a tree which have drooped almost to the ground through the heavy cropping in the past, they should be sawn back to a suitable growth going in an upright direction. This is usually known as de-horning. If, on the other hand, a branch has grown too tall and the pruner saws down to a nice lower branch or lateral growing in the right direction-then this is known as 'cutting up'.

Fruit Tree Cultivation Tips

The caterpillars of the winter moths, and tortrix moths, which ruin the leaves and often the blossoms in the spring, may very largely be controlled if you spray the trees properly with a good tar-oil wash, like Mortegg, in December, because at that time their eggs are on the branches of the tree.

Though it is possible to do this all round the tree in any one year it is usually considered kinder to the tree (and. incidentally to the gardener!) if a half-circle is dug out on one side of the tree one winter and the remaining half-circle dug out the following winter.

Once the trees are growing well, then all that need be done as a rule is to keep the grass cut short. This means mowing once a fortnight, and the grass clippings are allowed to pass back into the ground.

Once a year, early in February, an organic nitrogenous fertilizer, like cocoa shell, may be used at 6 cwt. per acre, or in small gardens at 3 oz. to the sq. yard. In small gardens, where cost doesn't matter quite so much, dried blood could be used at 2 oz. to the sq. yard or hoof and. horn meal at a similar rate.

Another method of encouraging the production of fruit buds is the shoot-circling method. The laterals or one-year-old side growths, instead of being pruned in the summer or winter are left at full length and then are tied down with string to form an almost complete circle.

The result of this circling or curving is that fruit buds are produced because the sap is checked and the following season the circled shoot may be pruned back to just above a suitable fruit bud. I found Ellison's Orange, Charles Ross, Tydeman's Early Worcester, Sunset and Jewel to do particularly well under this system.

There is little doubt that the most important difference between the fruit grower who uses chemical fertilizers and the organic fruit grower is that the former thinks that he knows best what his trees need and proceeds to give it to them in comparatively large doses. He ought to know by this time, however, that much of the dosage thus given is never taken up by the trees at all.

On the other hand, pruning may be necessary to remove a dead branch or some diseased portion of a tree or bush. A tree may have got too tall, and so need shortening, or a bush tree in a garden may be growing too vigorously, and so will need root pruning.

A rambling, straggling type of tree can be pruned into a more shapely specimen. Pruning can give to the owner of the tree the number of branches he needs.

It cannot be denied that most of the chemical fertilizers used today are, in fact, produced synthetically in factories. They are applied in the form of soluble concentrated salts and thus they produce in the soil conditions which have ho counterpart in nature.

Choose a knife very carefully indeed. It must be made of the best steel, and be set at the right angle. It should have a slightly curved blade and be made by a firm with a first-class reputation like Saynor's. Most people today prefer a knife which closes because then it can easily be pocketed.

It is said that this chisel edge lasts longer than the normal gradual tapered edge which you get from the other method of sharpening.

This usually has a blade 2 inches long and a handle 4 inches in length. The blade is sharply pointed at one end so that the budder may cut through the bark. The handle has a finely tapered bone end because this is used for opening up the bark under which the bud shield will be placed.

When pruning a normal lateral or side growth it is usual to grip the lateral with one hand below the piece to be cut off and make a cut just above a bud with the other hand at an angle of 45 degrees.

On the other hand, when pruning a leader or one-year-old end growth of a branch, it is a good thing to put the thumb of the one hand on the actual bud to be pruned and so, having steadied the leader, to make the cut with the knife at an angle of 45 degrees just above this bud.

If, for instance, one has to use an attic or a loft, the floor has to be syringed over regularly to keep the atmosphere damp. Because a cellar is below ground very little external heat can penetrate because of the soil. For this reason, gardeners in the olden days often used to construct stores below ground level in order to ensure perfect insulation.

Never attempt to wrap apples that have been bruised, that are scabbed, or that have been bored into by codling maggots. You cannot even store stalkless apples or pears. One can buy special oiled wrapping papers for the purpose, but ordinary sheets of newspaper, when cut up into squares about 10 inches by 10 inches are very good, presumably because of the oil content of the printers' ink. An apple which has been properly wrapped in oiled paper and that does go rotten for some obscure reason is less able to infect the specimens next to it, and that is an extremely important point. As the wrapping tends to reduce the water loss instead of allowing it to escape, the process of overripening is delayed and the apple keeps longer in consequence.

In the case of small gardens, there is often little that can be done because, even if drain-pipes are put down, there is nowhere for the excess water to go. The only thing one can do in such cases is to dig a sump in the corner of the garden.

Blackcurrants may be ruined with reversion; though, if they have just been neglected, from no pruning, it would be just a case of cutting out about half the old wood to within, say, 6 inches of soil level and thus encouraging new wood to grow which will fruit in two years' time.

Draining is quite a technical job but, generally speaking, the agricultural drains are laid no deeper than 2 feet 6 inches and no farther apart than 15 feet.

With redcurrants and gooseberries, the main soil deficiency is likely to be potash, and here wood ashes should be given at 1/2 / lb. to the sq. yard all round the bushes as far as the branches spread. With blackcurrants the deficiency is likely to be nitrogen, and in this case fish guano can be applied at 3 oz. to the sq. yard for 3 or 4 feet around each bush.

If there are ditches surrounding the property, these should be kept cleaned out so as to make it easier for the water to move away. Where neighbours own the ditches, they should be persuaded to clean them out and there are ways and means of adding to the persuasiveness by consulting a solicitor!

In poultry runs a half-standard tree, with a stem of 4 feet or 4 feet 6 inches long, is often planted, but in most gardens and fruit farms, the bush tree is grown because it is easy to prune, pick and spray. Apples, however, lend themselves to many differing forms of culture. One can grow them as cordons tied to wires and posts provided for the purpose. One can have them as pillar trained, as spindles and on the L'arcure System. All these systems are most attractive to the compost grower.

It must be remembered, however, that varieties differ in their method of growth and in the way that they produce fruit buds. Some, like John Standish, Lord Derby, Edward VII and Egremont Russet, are normally upright in growth, especially until they start to bear heavy crops. Others, like Lane's Prince Albert, Gladstone and Irish Peach, are naturally spreading in growth.

Some, like Cornish Gilliflower, Worcester Pearmain, and St. Edmund's Russet, produce fruit buds on the tips of laterals and when these are cut hard back, as in normal forms of pruning, the fruit buds are removed.

On the other hand, there are varieties like Cox's Orange Pippin, Ribston Pippin and James Grieve, which like to form plump fruit buds on short spurs close to the main stem and so when lateral shoots are pruned, in the ordinary way, artificial fruit-bud-bearing spurs are produced readily.

The sides of such a bucket should be smooth so as to make certain that none of the fruits are damaged. The handle of the bucket should have a large hook fixed to it so that it can be hooked on to the rung of the ladder or on the branch of a tree.

The stalk then separates from the spur on which it is growing quite naturally and without having to do any tugging or pulling at all. Most people fail to realize that the skins of apples, pears, plums and peaches are very delicate. They have only got to be slightly bruised and they are seriously damaged. Furthermore, fungus spores may easily enter such a wound and rot will set in.

For home use two grades only are required as a rule, i.e. the good and the specked. By the way, when picking, never leave diseased fruit on the tree or this will be a source of trouble later, breeding, as it may, the spores of brown rot. Special pears being grown on cordons or espaliers may be protected by using little muslin bags which are put over the individual fruits and tied to the spurs. Thus the birds cannot peck, the wasps cannot bite, and, as the fruit ripens, it falls into the bag where it is held and comes to no harm.

Fruit growers have for some years been adopting this method for curing trees which appeared to be 'bark bound' but it is not generally known that it is a cure for silver leaf as well and on some farms 90 per cent of the trees affected with silver leaf have recovered when treated in this way and borne naturally two years later.

There is all the difference in the world between soft fruits and the more permanent top fruits and as will be seen later on it is sometimes necessary to eliminate rows of raspberries that are full of virus or to scrap gooseberries that are ruined by convolvulus.

It is a very good plan to mark the trees which are to be removed with a ring of white paint. If you, yourself, do this, then those you are employing to do the digging up of the trees will not make any mistakes.

Therefore, it is worth while tackling neglected trees carefully and gradually getting them right. The only exception to the rule, perhaps, is in the case of an orchard where there are gaps which amount to 25 per cent.

In some gardens raspberries, currants and blackberries these have to be grown in a wire-netting cage because of birds. When this is so it is as well to have the base of the cage made of wood to a height of, say, 18 inches and then, having planted the canes and the bushes shallowly but firmly, the straw will be applied all over the ground to the depth of a foot. This straw will mulch the ground, smother the weeds and, of course, make it very pleasant for the gardener to walk on - especially at picking time. The worms will pull some of the straw into the ground in time and when this happens a top dressing of more straw may be given to keep the level constant.

The bushes are fed through the straw. A fish manure with a 5 per cent potash content will be given at 4 oz. to the sq. yard, say, in February, and a second application at a similar rate immediately the fruit has been picked. The straw is not disturbed when the organic fertilizer is applied: this is allowed to wash through naturally when it rains.

The result is, the roots of the canes and bushes are able to develop in the top few inches of soil where there is the biggest bacterial activity. Because they are never disturbed by hoeing or forking, they are extremely happy, with the result that very heavy crops of particularly well-flavored fruit are produced.

There may be gardens situated in our cities or towns where it is not easy to get hold of straw or where this commodity is extremely expensive, and I am therefore asked what the ideal substitute might be. Some have used old sawdust for the purpose. This should be stored for about a year in the open before using, preferably in a three-sided bin made of planks of wood. It could be 4 feet by 4 feel or as big as 8 feet by 8 feet.

A layer of sawdust should be put into position at the bottom of the bin, 8 inches deep. This should then be sprinkled with fish manure at 4 oz. to the sq. yard. Another layer of sawdust should be put on, another sprinkling of fish manure, and so on, until the required height is reached.

When propagating runners the young plants strike readily into the sedge peat, and one can obtain new healthy stock as a result in August, and thus get the planting of the new beds done at the right time.

Pruning Fruit Trees with Knives

For years I carried a non-clasping knife in a sheath on my belt because I found it steadier. After a number of years the knife with a closing blade is apt to get loose at the rivets, and then it wobbles. The blade should have an overall length in either case of 7 or 8 inches.

Narrow blades are provided for getting in between V-shaped crotches formed by two branches growing out of the main trunk close together. It is also possible to buy a saw with a slightly curved blade which acts chiefly with a downward pull. For renovating neglected orchards, these curved blades are often fitted to a long handle, so that a pruner can use them when standing on the ground, and thus saw off a branch some way up.

All saws must be kept sharpened, and the teeth must be properly set. There are hand tooth-setting tools which can be bought for this purpose, while the edges of the teeth can be filed to keep them sharp. It always helps if a little oil is applied to the blade, so as to enable the saw to slide through the wood swiftly.

There are two main kinds of long-handled pruners. The first consists of a pair of Rolcut secateurs fixed to the end of a long, light, smooth pole, with a suitable wire operating one of the handles. A movable wooden handle is then fixed near the base of the pole, with the result that it is possible to cut off a shoot quite high up while the pruner is standing on terra firma. It is often used for pruning half- standard trees.

When big branches have to be removed it is necessary to use a sharp saw. This should have a blade 8 to 10 inches long, and the teeth should be set wide so that they cut through the green wood readily. I often use a double-edged saw, with U teeth on one blade and finer V-shaped teeth on the other blade.

At the same time the laterals growing on the main stem should be cut back to within an inch of their base, again to just above a bud. The following year such growths should be cut out altogether. If the pruning has been properly done, and the weather is kind, each of these three pruned-back branches should produce two more strong growths, and so at the beginning of the third year there should be at least six branches instead of three. Once again these should be well spaced around the tree.

Or just need someone to accompany you for the day? Perhaps someone you would feel comfortable walking around. You would be surprised that people are willing to pay for a bit of companionship and camaraderie. Time is gold after all.

Do it on a per-hour basis. Work for a compromise with people who are willing to help you with this project, but protect their rights as well. Have the right to refuse a customer service if need be, especially if the client looks suspicious.

It's a fun project that could help your members be more socially-active, with the only investment being the booth that serves as your home base. You can even do it alone if you want, though there's not much of an income, but you could be doing heavy labor or nothing at all and still earn a bit of money.
