There is no fruit like the strawberry for proving the value of organic methods of growing. It is a woodland plant or, should I say, a plant which loves to dwell on the edges of woodlands where it gets the sun and yet is constantly being 'fed' by the falling leaves of trees.

The strawberry growers of the early Victorian days used to take a delight in grubbing large coppices and then to use this land for strawberry growing. It was then, of course, very rich in humus and had a nice soil structure also.

The strawberry is, of course, a surface rooter and therefore you really ought not to cultivate once the plants are in position. The forking and hoeing method of growing strawberries is ideal. Get the land clean before the strawberries are planted, in the summer, and after that keep the weeds down by mulching, coupled with a certain amount of hand-weeding, if necessary.

After all, if you get the strawberries growing happily, in open soil rich in organic matter, the leaves of the plants will smother the weeds. It is after the picking is over that a certain amount of hand-weeding may have to be done.

There was a vogue, some years back, of burning the straw in situ after it had been put down in the summer to keep the berries clean. It was said that the burning did no harm, providing the flame ran down the rows quickly. In fact, it was claimed that the heat would burn the weeds and kill off numerous pests, let alone applying potash automatically to the ground.

The rows can be 2 feet apart an.d the plants set out 18 inches apart in the rows. Those who allow runners to root in between the rows and so cultivate strawberries on what is called the matted-bed system, often have the rows 3 feet apart, with the plants 15 inches apart in the rows.

To live through this life threatening wound, and get away from the rebels, he creates a suit made of armor, which protects and strengthens him. Iron Man is born.

HAMLET 2: Failed actor Mr. Marshz has found himself teaching the high school theater classes to uninterested students. The school loses a building due to destruction, so the powers to be feel the useless theater coarses must be eliminated. With a challenge now in front of him, he tries to keep the school from dropping his classes by producing Hamlet 2, an original interpretation of the Shakespeare classic, which he put to paper himself.

JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH: Searching for his missing brother, a science professor goes on a mission that sends him into the depths of our planet. This is a new version of the 1959 production, which was about the classic work by celbrated writer Jules Verne. This sci-fi adventure stars Brendan Fraser, and Anita Briem.

TROPIC THUNDER: Starting with an incredible cast this film is a spoof on many of the most popular war movies. To get better results from his underachieving super stars to see the movie be a success, the desperate director into the wild, leaving them to fend for themselves. The object is to frightnen them into the realism needed for a graet war film, which hidden cameras will capture. Unbelievabley, as the director walks over a land mine and is blown apart, the actors are now truely on their own, and they start acting, thinking it's a big set, but things are getting very, very real. Jack Black, Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Jr., and Tom Cruise.

WALL-E: This film is a science fiction adventure in animation. Mankind has left Earth, since it had become a pile of rubbish. Wall-E, a trash collecting robot, is assigned to continue cleaning. Years later, when a robot namend Eve shows up searching to see if the planet can sustain any life, Wall-E is finally not alone. Eventually, when Eve is recovered by the craft that sent her, Wall-E sneaks aboard, and starts an incredible adventure.

Jumper: While almost drowning, David Rice (Hayden Christensen) learns an amazing thing. He can actually teleport himself to anywhere he desires to be, anytime he wants. He then comes to learn that he is not alone in having this ability. Unfortunately, after a few years of fun, he is exposed to hunters that are trying to rid the world of jumpers. Now he is in a fight for survival, as the hunters try to track him down.

THE CHRONICALS OF NARNIA, PRINCE CASPIAN: It's only about one down the road in there "regular" lives, when Edmund, Peter, Susan, and Lucy are mysteriously pulled back into Narnia. Prince Caspian has blownn Susan's magic horn, in a desparate plea for help. In their one year at home, centuries have passed in Narnia, but the four legendary characters have be summoned back to save Narnia from the evil Telmarines. With the aid of the the bravest in the forrest, including, a dwarf, the centaurs, and a very skilled mouse, they conquer their foes and free Narnia.

BOLT: Bolt is an animated comedy. Bolt, is a dog who is an actor, who in his role on television, has super hero dog powers. The thing about Bolt is that he is convinced he has superpowers. After he is unexpectedly put into a real life situation, he realizes that he is only a normal dog. On a journey to get back home, he finds help, in the form of Mittens, the cat, and Rhino, the hampster.

Break up Pain - How To Recover From A Painful Breakup

Pasadena: A Tournament of Culture

To quote a bad line from a mediocre movie: "Pop quiz, hotshot!" What do Albert Einstein, Amelia Earhart, Kevin Costner, Julia Child, George S. Patton, Eddie Van Halen, David Lee Roth, and Paul McCartney all have in common? True, they've all got (or had) killer hair, but more than that, they are (or were at one time), residents of sunny Pasadena, California. If you've ever visited (or lived in) the City of Roses, you'll know why they all chose to call this fabulous city home.

So what is it about Pasadena that makes it so fabulous? Indeed, there are a number of nice places to live in Southern California, but none of them blend their past with their present as effectively as Pasadena. Once home to Hahamog-na tribe, a branch of the Tongva Nation, the first European settlers would not appear until the arrival of the Indiana Colony in 1873. The name of the city was agreed upon by popular consensus in 1886 and is Chippewa Indian for "of the valley."

Pasadena wasted no time carving out a cultural niche for itself. Though San Francisco was still considered the cosmopolitan city of California, Pasadena was not going to be outdone. In 1922, the Norton Simon Museum was founded, while the Pasadena Playhouse was erected five years earlier. The Art Center of College and Design, a well-respected art school, was established in 1930 with a mission to produce students who would work to change the world. And of course, there is the JPL or Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which got its start in 1936. Pyramids of Power: Moody Gardens

The Moody Gardens is found in Galveston, Texas and is hard to miss if you're looking well enough. It is owned by the city of Galveston but funded, supported and operated by the Moody Foundation. The contract must really be that complicated for this to happen.

The gardens are divided into three features, all of them pyramids. The first one being the Aquarium, a pyramid that hosts aquatic life, whether freshwater or not. The second, the Rain forest pyramid contains tropical plants and animals, some coming from the other side of the world. The third attraction, the Discovery pyramid, acts like a museum that hosts branches of science and its wonders. Currently, there's a fourth attraction, the Palm beach, where a sandy lagoon could be seen, most children preferring this over the first three.

The Aquarium pyramid is a blue pyramid that rises above 12 stories high. The 8000 species that can be found here, fishes, plants, mammals, vertebrates and invertebrates alike, are gathered from all four corners of the world. The four corners being the Caribbean exhibit, the South Atlantic exhibit, the North Pacific exhibit and the South Pacific Exhibit.

The Rain forest pyramid, currently closed but will open on April 25, hosts at least 2000 species of plants and animals found in rain forests across the world. There are three rain forests being currently hosted by the pyramid, the Asian Rain forest, the African rain forest and the American rain forest. The Asian rain forest includes the forests of Australia and the Pacific Ring of Fire. The African rain forest exhibit has some commercial plants that can only be found in the area. The American rain forest, meanwhile, stretches its reach from South to North.

The Discovery Pyramid is just that. It's all science. Not to put it down, but you'd find your kid dragging you back to the other exhibits even before you probably step on this one.

Get Your Ex Back Even After Wronging Them

Do you want to get your ex back after they dumped you for wronging them in some way? Maybe you cheated on them or were too controlling or you fought and argued with them all the time. At some point, they got fed up and dumped you.

So now you are sorry for what you've done and you've learned a thing or two about how not to act if you want to keep a mate around. This is good. The next thing to understand is that there is real hope for reconnecting with your ex and getting them back into relationship with you.

The first step to getting your ex back begins with owning up inside yourself to the fact that you wronged them. You, yourself, by your actions, caused your mate enough emotional pain that they gave up on the whole possibility of your relationship. You hurt them by what you did in such a way that they felt the only thing to do emotionally was to hit the eject button on you.

Why is admitting to ourselves that we wronged our mate so important? Because we naturally don't like to take the blame for what we did. We like to project the blame for our problems onto others or stress or whatever. Sometimes we even blame our ex for making us wrong them!

Once you've acknowledged to yourself what you did, the next step is to admit it to your mate. You say in your own way "I wronged you." You don't try to explain or defend or blame anything else. You man or woman up and admit that you did them wrong.

Why is this important? Because when someone hurts us we can't start to forgive, usually, until we know that they own up to what they did. If you cheated on your ex and say "it didn't mean anything" then they will think you might do it again, because it wasn't that big and meaningful an issue to you. But if you own up, your ex can at least feel that you understand what you did wrong.

Until we know that our mate understands that cheating was wrong, or being too controlling was wrong, we arent ever going to be sure they wont repeat the bad behavior. And so we cant start to forgive. If you want your ex to forgive make sure one of the first things out of your mouth, before you ever say Im sorry, is to say I wronged you!

So instead of beginning with endless I'm sorry's, do something more powerful first. Own up to yourself that you did them wrong, them admit it to them without excuses. This is a good way to begin to fix the damage you caused and make way for them to consider taking you back.

In fact, it is not only recommended that you do, it is required that you do. Not knowing all of the international air travel rules could land you in a boatload of trouble.

When it comes to air travel rules, many travelers, maybe even you, automatically think of being in-flight. While there are in-flight travel rules that you must stay by, there are also other rules. These other rules are ones that apply in all airports, including international airports. Since you will arrive at the airfield first, before actually boarding your airplane, it is advised that you first familiarize yourself with these common air travel rules.

As previously mentioned, there are a number of airfield rules that exist in all airports, regardless of whether those airports are international airports or domestic airports. These rules commonly include a list of prohibited items, the screening of all baggage, the removal of your shoes, and the screening of passengers. In addition to these airfield travel rules, which can be found in almost all airports in the United States, there are some air travel rules that only apply to international airports.

The number one rule that you must stay by at an international airfield is identifying who you are. Since airline officials and airfield security cannot guarantee that you are who you claim to be, you will need to show proof of identification. Depending on where you are traveling to, this finding may need to be more than a simple government issued finding card or driver?s license. In fact, you may also need to supply your birth certificate, a passport, a visa, or a certificate of citizenship. In the event that you refuse to cooperate with the airline staff, you may be putting yourself and other passengers in danger.

While it is important to understand all international air travel rules, there are many travelers who are unsure why those rules are so important. They are important not only for your country and well being, but for the country and well being of others. Although it may seem ridiculous at the time, but if you refuse to stay in your seat or you are caught arguing with airfield security, you will find that you are automatically tagged a terror suspect. This is largely due in part to the fear of another terrorist attack. Once this happens it is often difficult or impossible to go back to normal.

In the event that you violate international airport security rules, intentionally or not, it is likely that you will be pulled aside. Depending of the rule that you violated, you may only receive a warning, but you could also receive much more. Dating On The Dark Side: How To Deal With A Married Woman

It's happened to me. Perhaps it has happened to you too. I'm out on the town, when I meet a really nice looking woman, who is VERY aggressive. She's flirting up a storm, and I'm ready to go for it. It looks like a fun night ahead when I notice something.

Questions start swirling in my head, but I primarily want to know what she is thinking, being married and acting like this.

This can and will happen though. Why do married people flirt? From what information I've gathered, it normally comes down to boredom and neglect, and with latter, revenge is often the motive.

Other times, the woman feels safe playing around with the risk, because she knows if things go too far, she can point at her ring, feign innocence and say "sorry, I'm married!" It can be annoying as hell, no doubt.

Now, I don't think I have to go into detail about what a pissed off husband can do. I think everyone knows full well the risks. Even with some of the advice I'll give in the article later, there will still be some risk involved. Be cautious first.

The next question comes down to the moral issue of it. Some guys don't care who they are screwing around with. Others apply the golden rule - I wouldn't want it done to me, so I don't do it to others. I won't tell you which morality to uphold, that's up to you. Personally, I don't deal with the situation, because I have an abundance of beautiful single women in my life.

That aside, if you DO decide to pursue a married woman, there are a few things you should be ready for. Here's what they are, and how to handle any issues that arise.

First, you are dealing with a person who isn't thinking in terms of fairness. She is putting herself first. Her husband wasn't considered in the equation. Do you think you will be? It's doubtful.

Be upfront with her about it, right off the bat. Sure, it could blow the whole situation, but that might be inevitable anyhow. This way you can just cut to the chase.

Just ask her what is with the ring. Very simply. If you are giving her the impression that you do NOT care either way, then she should be forthcoming and the situation will take a direction.

From there, you can gauge her answers. If she is treating you like a "safe flirt", then it will probably be over then. She'll find a way to withdraw from the whole thing. That's fine, you saved yourself some time.

If it goes past that, then you'll need to pay some attention to what she's saying to you. She might ask if it matters to you. Obviously, if it's gotten to this point, it doesn't. Let her know, but also ask where it is going to go.

Some women might balk there too. You are eliminating some of the risk of the game for her, and that can be fun. It's also forcing her to look directly at what she's doing. Believe me though, it's for the better.

If things continue, generally I'd say you are in. Just keep your eyes peeled. Watch for some guy who is staring at you, etc.

I'd also recommend taking the time to objectively analyze the situation. Is she secretive? Is she blabbering about how much she hates her husband? Try to get a general idea of WHY she's doing this.

All the above is about safety measures. After that, if things are still going, I'd recommend keeping it to a quick fling. Odds are, it's not going anywhere anyhow.

There is a chance she'll reconcile. That means the relationship is probably done. And if she gets conscious of the whole thing, you might find yourself in the crosshairs of the angry husband. The best bet is to have as little attachment to her as possible. In all ways. You don't want her knowing where you live, who you hang out with, etc.. Careful if the pickup spot was a regular hangout for you. You might have to quit going there.

And you won't want to get emotionally attached either. It won't end well, generally. You don't know her well enough, nor him. Keep your hide intact and move on quickly. And no matter how tough you are, in the end run, it won't be worth getting into it physically. Is it ever?

This is a lot of information to remember, but it is important. Overall, you have to put your well being first. A fling is never worth that kind of risk.

Tips on Growing Fig Tree

When replacing most of the soil, mix in with it two 6-inch potfuls of mortar rubble, and if this is not available use one 6-inch potful of crushed chalk.

Planting can be done any time in the winter, but it is best to plant the moment all the leaves have fallen in November. I plant trees as two-year-olds; that is, two years from layering, for he invariably propagated his trees that way though they will strike quite well from cuttings.

As the short growths made each year are those that bear the fruits, the only pruning done should be a cutting back hard to form new branches as replacements. Figs seem to have wood buds almost anywhere on their branches and so one can prune to almost any point. For the first five or six years little pruning is necessary, but once quite big trees have been formed, about 25 per cent of the wood should be removed each November, this being done by cutting down one quite large branch almost to its base. This I find it gives better results than cutting out a number of widely distributed branches.

The method of training is, of course, on the fan system, and wires are therefore provided at 18 inches apart so that the branches may be tied in. It is easy fe,x a fig to cover a wall space of about 35 feet on a wall 15 feet high. Such a tree, of course, bears prodigiously. But even young trees four years of age will bear twenty to twenty- five fruits if they are happy.

In addition to the cutting out of whole branches, from the point of view of rejuvenatioo, it is necessary if figs grow too strongly to root-prune. So every Year, taking the trunk as a centre, a half-circle must be scribed with a 5-foot radius, and along that half-circle a sharp spade must be plunged about 18 inches deep so as to cut off any roots which may have escaped out of the asbestos 'box' provided.

Anyway, it helps if the roots can be restricted, and so many dig out a hole a yard square and to the depth of 2 feet 6 inches, and then put into the bottom of the hole brickbats, trodden in tightly, to ensure good drainage and to discourage the growth of tap roots. Squares of asbestos roofing sheets cut to size can then be placed in position to line the sides of the square hole before the soil is put back.

The fair can actually be quite a mysterious place when darkness settles in, and the lights twinkle their soft glows like frozen fireflies.

I would have never thought that the fair grounds would grow silent and soft-toned when night came. I had arrived earlier during the day and had scowled in distaste at how busy and impersonal the place seemed to be. For me anyway.

From the dusty trails of the morning, it had lain quiet and dead after during the night.

Only the soft footfalls of a few pairs of feet stirred the dust, before it settled down again, as if sleeping. Floodlights pierced the night sky, like pylons of white, only visible when it was dark.

I swear, the popcorn I had brought from the nice, old lady tasted more popcorny? Well, as how corny popcorn would taste. The soda had an extra zip, and the corndogs didn't taste too oily or fatty at all. Everything was clear and sharp.

Going 'round the Merry-Go seemed more magical too. It is just you, the horse, and the fair-ride music that seems less annoying in the night than during the day.

People have that soft smile on their faces, a testament to their long day. You'd know fatigue when you see it, but here you find a bit of peace and quiet. That in itself, is as enchanting as it can be.

And when you go home from the fair, and look back towards it's gates, you feel like you just left another dimension. A different one. One that opened only on that very special moment, one you would think would never, ever open for you again.

You find yourself wanting to spend another night inside the fair. If not, at least you want to find it in another place or another era.

Tips on Growing Blackberries and Blackcurrants

There are several choice varieties of blackberries for compost growing. The following are some of the blackberry choice varieties for compost growing. Ashton Cross is a blackberry raised by the Long Ashton Research Station. A vigorous grower but the canes are not particularly thorny. Can be planted as close as 8 feet apart. Fruit large, deep black and attractive, with the real blackberry flavour. Season late July-Aug.

It will not be long before the tip grows roots and pushes its way through the soil, so that by the beginning of the second week of September excellent young plants are produced which are well rooted. It is possible by about the end of the second week of September to cut back the tip plants to just below the point where the new growth is taking place. This can be done in November. The tip shoot, however, may be left in the ground where it is, when it will be ready for transplanting in the following August.

John Innes is raised at the John Innes Horticultural Institution. Heavy bearer. Growth not too strong. May be planted as close as 8 feet apart. Fruits large, handsome, sweet, juicy, with few seeds. Season late Aug.-Sept. Marion is a new blackberry, being introduced from the U.S.A., with berries longer than wide. Colour bright black, flavour superior. Has cropped to 7 tons per acre.

Merton Early is the best flavoured blackberry there is. It is a natural hybrid with the real wild blackberry flavour. It is picked after Bedford Giant. Can be planted as close as 4-6 feet apart. Can easily be propagated from seed, as it is completely apomictic.

Sometimes the green capsid bugs suck the leaves, thus deforming them and splitting them and even stunting the growth. The safest way of killing this pest is to spray with liquid nicotine, dissolving a oz. in a 21 gallon can of water and adding a dessert spoonful of Stergene.

Parsley Leaved is said to be the nearest one to the common English blackberry. The leaves are deeply cut and so are most ornamental. A good variety for pergolas and trellises. Fruit is large and glossy black. Season Aug.-Sept.

Moving on, let's look at what you need to bring aside from yourself. Aside from a practiced set of manners, impeccable grooming and style, you'll want to play into her romantic ideals. Go beyond the call of duty and offer her a sense of adventure, spontaneity, and romance. You aren't just offering a physical toy, you should attempt to transform her world when you are in it. Simple enough, but it isn't easy. It takes some work and a sense of attentiveness.

Given all this... why would you want to date someone like this? Is it at all rewarding? The answer is a resounding yes! If you are lucky enough to find an attractive one, that is great! She'll also offer you, aside from financial relief, a lover who will, more than likely, be your superior. A woman's libido is heightened as she gets older. Couple that with her experience, and you could be in for a really fun time. Add in the fact that you'll probably be VERY well pampered and be able to experience things you never thought you would be able to afford. And who knows, this might actually grow into a good relationship.

So if you make the cut, and feel like you can handle what is described above, by all means go for it. Just be cautious and respectful, and you might end up having a great experience.

Alex Rodriguez affectionately known as A-Rod to his team mates and fans is the third base man for the New York Yankees. This was the highest average of an American League right hand batter since DiMaggio. Plus it was the third highest ever for a short stop if any league. The year would continue with Alex having the highest totals in runs, hits, doubles, extra base hits, and slugging, ending the year as Major League Player of the Year and nearly the youngest to boot.

Rodriguez played with the Texas Rangers briefly before signing with the New York Yankees in 2004. As a Yankee, Rodriguez continued to be a record-setting player, winning MVP in 2005 and 2007. Despite his performance on the field, Rodriguez has often been criticized by fans for failing to deliver under pressure. Rodriguez is unrattled by the criticism, saying: "I could care less. In my career, I've been hearing it for a long time. It will never stop until you win five or six World Series in a row, and hit a Joe Carter home run. I've done a lot of special things in this game, and for none of that to be considered clutch, it's an injustice." No matter what some fans may think, Rodriguez is highly valued by his team, signing a 10-year contact in 2007 with the Yankees for $275 million - with the prospect of more should Rodriguez manage to break the home run record.

Pearl is a moderate grower and heavy cropper. Good for dwarf pyramid, cordons and pillars. Heavy cropper. Flowers very frost- resistant. Apples deep red slightly russet. Resistant to scab. Season Sept.-Jan. Red Ellision is a bud sport from Ellison's Orange. Flowers over a long period. Pollinates most other apples. Forms a symmetrical tree. Crops heavily. Apples highly coloured crimson. Resistant to scab. Season Oct.-Jan. Red Melba is for those who like a soft mealy apple in August. A moderate grower, fairly resistant to scab. Season Aug. It is an excellent for dumplings and baking. Very heavy cropper. Compact grower. Produces enormous creamy yellow fruits with slight flush. Resistant to scab but subject to canker. Season Oct.-Nov. (but can be picked earlier if desired).

Ed ward VII is a very late flowerer, so useful where there are spring frosts. Compact grower. Easy spur-bearer. Nice round to oblong, dark green apples. Excellent flavour when cooked. Crawley Beauty is the best pollinator. Scab resistant. Season Jan.-April. Egremont Russet makes a small upright heavy cropping hardy tree. Extremely beautiful when in flower, good pollinator for Cox. A lovely flat russet apple. Produces fruit spurs freely. Resistant to scab. Season Oct.-Dec.

Crawley Beauty have flowers so late, usually late May or early June, and so is not subject to spring frosts. Needs a pollinator like Edward VII. Apples round, somewhat flattened. Green with red flush and stripes on one side. Resistant to scab. Season Dec.-Mar.

Crimson Cox is a very similar to Cox's Orange Pippin, though in my orchard the flavour is intensified. All the apples are bright red.

D'arcy Spice is a delicious Essex apple of excellent flavour. Roundish, flattened, of a yellow colour covered with brownish russet. Not easy to grow and only a medium cropper. The fruit tree bears fruit very late as well as being sweet, juicy and aromatic. Fairly resistant to scab. Season Mar.-May.

Sweet Cherry Varieties

Everything should be done in the case of the fan-trained sweet cherry to keep growth down to a minimum. Strong side growths, for instance, can be bent round in a circle and then as fruit buds form lower down they may be pruned back to this point. If the trees do get out of hand, then the only thing to do is to root prune.

Mulching with sedge peat to the depth of an inch for 5 feet or so around each tree ensures that the trees are protected against drought in summer and yet they do not receive too much nitrogen. The use of well-rotted dung or good compost around cherries invariably postpones cropping and encourages disease- because of excessive growth.

It is best to plant cherries in the month of November. Standard trees and fan-shaped trees should be planted when three or four years old. The season after planting, the leaders or strong shoots are cut back by about half and this careful hard pruning proceeds for another three years.

The planting of cherries on a large scale must be regarded as a long-term investment. Great care has to be taken to provide the right pollinators, for without the correct inter-planting, the trees will not crop. Before, therefore, embarking on Commercial Cherry Growing, the reader would be well advised to consult Mr. S. R. Dixon, 'Cambridge', Teynham, nr. Sittingbourne, Kent, the Cherry Advisor of the British Association of Consultants in Agriculture and Horticulture. It is possible, on a small scale, to plant sweet cherries as fan-shaped trees against a wall or fence 20 feet apart.

In the case of the wall cherries, the aim in the early stages should be to space the branches out a foot apart, radiating like a fan, and then, having cut the one-year-old growths back by half for two years after planting, it is best to leave the tree to grow naturally, except for summer pruning in. July and August, which may consist of (a) cutting back the very strong growths growing perpendicularly away from the wall right down to their base, and (b) the weaker growths to within three buds of their base. If growths develop on the wall side, these had better be rubbed out when they are only an inch long.

It is better never to disturb the roots of cherries and thus in gardens the sedge-peat mulching system is adopted and in farms a grass sward is established. With cherries it is best to get the sward down as early as possible even if it means hoeing shallowly around the tree in a circle 3 feet across or so for the first two years, so as to prevent the grass robbing the young roots of moisture and food as it is trying to establish itself.

Pest and Diseases of Apricots

At the present moment the two popular rootstocks are Brompton and St. Julian A. There is no reason, therefore, why stones should not be sown early in May, 2-3 inches deep, in a prepared border and, say, 2 feet apart. A year later, if trees result, these can be dug up for planting against a warm wall.

The cultivated blackberry crops very heavily indeed and the only snag about it, perhaps, is the training of the long one-year-old shoots. It is very popular for bottling, canning and cooking, and when at its best is much used for dessert. It is said that there are over 100 species of wild blackberries in this country.

Blackberries, of course, grow on their own roots and are not budded or grafted on to stocks. Blackberries grow very well indeed on the compost system. It pays to apply straw a foot deep or more not only between the rows but among the plants and thus there is no hoeing or forking to do. Such straw should be applied at the end of the first year, once it is known that the canes are growing well.

Choice varieties for compost growing are Breda. One of the hardier kind. Has, I am told, been grown successfully as a standard in the south-west. Medium-sized orange- yellow fruit, flushed red. Good flavour. Season early to mid-Aug. Hemskerk is fairly hardy. When sheltered, crops well. Large orange-yellow fruit blotched with red. Excellent flavour. Season end July-early Aug. Kaisiia is moderately hardy, when protected will crop heavily. Fruit medium-sized. Yellow and red. Season mid-Aug.

Large Early Mount Gauiet Moorpark is perhaps the most famous of the true English apricots. Fruits largish brown-orange-yellow with brownish red on sunny side. Season late Aug.-early Sept.

I have never dared to sow the soil down to grass but I have mulched the ground where apricots are growing with sedge peat an inch deep in June, because apricots can suffer in dry weather. Though liberal watering in a drought I prefer the simple mulching system.

Choice Varieties for Compost Growing

There are several kinds of common pests and diseases on currant fruit tree.

The Big Bud Mite, which causes the buds of the blackcurrants to swell out three and four times the size, will attack red and white currants, but in this case the buds are killed-they do not swell out. If, therefore, you have bushes which do not fruit or which have buds which do not open, then an attack of Big Bud Mite must be suspected. The only thing to do in this case is to use a lime sulphur spray, dissolving I pint in 49 pints of water for this purpose. It will be seen that only a weak solution is needed.

Fay's Prolific is a good old-fashioned early variety. A heavy cropper with long bunches of large berries. Useless, however, in windy situation, because the side shoots are apt to blow off. Season early. Lacton No.1 is a good flavoured early variety. A regular heavy cropper with long bunches of large, excellent, crimson berries. A great favourite of mine. Season late.

Minnesota fruit is very large and brightly coloured. A strong grower. Season mid. Perfection is an excellent cropper with long bunches, large heavy berries, bush tends to spread. Season mid. Rainy Castle is medium bunches of medium-sized red fruits. Has now been largely superseded by better varieties. Some people swear by it for cordons. Season mid-late.

Red Lake is quite popular because it is an upright, moderately vigorous grower. It is a heavy regular cropper with brightly coloured berries. Season mid. Rivers' Late Red is included because it is the best late red. A rather spreading bush with fairly long bunches of bright red fruit. Season late. Wilson's Long Bunch is a medium-sized fruits being borne on long bunches, as its name suggests. Quite a strong upright grower. Season late.

White Dutch is a heavy cropper, shortish bunches bearing large, whitish-yellow berries. Bush somewhat spreading. Season late. White Grape is a very similar to White Dutch and appears to be synonymous. White Trasparent is sometimes called White Pearl. A heavy cropper with largish berries. Season mid. White Versailles is a variety bearing long bunches of large sweet berries. The growth is medium, stiff and upright. Quite a heavy cropper. Season early.

Finding yourself in Fairs

The first answer people would get when associating fairs to something would be "roadtrip."

And they wouldn't be wrong. Almost half of the demography loitering around the grounds would belong to a picture-perfect family; with Dad looking all huff-puff, Mom somewhat smiling, Big Sister looking bored, and Little Brother holding his balloon with an excited twinkle in his eyes.

But fairs are for everyone, no exceptions. Be it for the filthy rich, the marginally wealthy, the struggling middle-man, the fleeters cutting from their jobs, or the poor guy sleeping in the bench; everyone is welcome to the fair (unless there's an uberly expensive entrance fee, then I guess only the rich and the wealthy get to go in.)

The Real Change Agent

"I am the Lord, I do not change" (Malachi 3:6).

I don't like change, and I don't like surprises. I want everything done decently and in order. Predictability is just below godliness on my list. The problem is, I live in a very unpredictable world-and so do you.

From the time I was a young girl, however, I knew things weren't as they should be. Inequity surrounded me, but I felt impotent to do anything about it. As a result, when I hit my teens, I became a champion of causes, defending the underdog at every opportunity and jumping on every soapbox that demanded justice for someone.

None of it did much good, though. You see, I recognized the problem but I didn't know the Problem-Solver. I saw the injustice but had no relationship with the righteous Judge. I longed for people to be treated fairly and equally but erroneously believed that unfair and unequal human beings could dispense such treatment.

To be honest, I'm concerned with people who are satisfied with the status quo, who don't see the need for equality and justice-even if they don't know how to deliver it. If we have any compassion at all, we must look around us and see the pain and suffering of others and long to "change" things and make it all right.

But only God can do that. Only God is good-all the time. Only God is right-all the time. Only God is perfect-all the time. We are not. What we see around us that needs change is not circumstances, but human nature, sin nature, fallen nature, that all-about-me mentality that is so deep-seated within each of us. Perhaps that's why, on a personal level, I resist change and cling to predictability and familiarity. It hurts to change. Real change means I have to let go of who I am, who I have become over many years and decades of walking this earth, who I am that is opposite of what I was created to be.

John the Baptist acknowledged that he needed to change by declaring that he must decrease and the life of Jesus increase within him. Why? Because Jesus is perfect; John wasn't. And neither are we. We all need to change-daily-and to become more like the One who is already perfect and therefore is the only One who does not need to change. If that process of change is painful for us, so be it. The Cross was no picnic, but Jesus willingly suffered and died there so we could open our hearts to Him and let Him change us from the inside out. Because that, beloved, is the only way real and lasting change takes place.

Whether we enjoy a predictable lifestyle or prefer to "fly by the seat of our pants," we will never see real change in this world until we allow that change to begin and continue daily in us. May our goal be to become more like the perfect, unchangeable God we serve-and may others be drawn to Him as they see that willingness to change radiating from our lives.

Climbing Strawberries

Worcester berry produces a large, very prickly bush like a gooseberry. The berries are very dark red in colour and they are not easy to pick because of the prickles. It has been grown as a hedge and then is planted 3 feet apart. If it is to be grown as a bush, it needs at least 6 feet. There are a number of hybrid berries which can be grown in a similar manner to blackberries or loganberries.

Boysenberry's exact parentage of this hybrid is not known but it probably has blackberry, raspberry and loganberry blood in it. The fruit is dark wine in colour and not too seedy. It is more delicious than the loganberry and has a more tender plug or core. It usually takes eighteen months before it starts to grow vigorously but, once the roots get a hold, very strong canes are heavy crops of fruits on long spurs, these being well away from the cane are easy to pick. The boysenberry is very hardy and extremely resistant to drought. Plant the canes 12 feet apart.

King's acre berry is a hybrid raised by crossing the blackberry and raspberry. It is picked earlier than the loganberry and the fruit comes away from the core easily, like a raspberry. It is like a long-shaped blackberry of excellent flavour. The canes are sturdy and bear heavy crops of fruit. Plant 8 feet apart.

Clean cultivation is usually practised for the first year but after that a straw or sedge peat mulching can be given. Little pruning is done until the third year when some of the older wood is cut out. The blueberry produces fruit on the previous season's growth. Varieties which are said to have succeeded well on Exmoor are Rubel, Jersey, Burlington and Pemberton. Rubel sets satisfactorily without having to be interplanted with a pollinator.

Most people, however, allow some of the plants to scramble over the surface of the ground and thus they produce a heavy crop of runners for next year's planting and they treat the climbing strawberry as an annual.

Youngberry was raised by a nurseryman called Young of California who crossed the dewberry with the Phenomenal Berry. The fruit is dark red, almost black, large, juicy and with a minimum of seeds. It is easy to pick, for the berries arc carried on spurs well away from the canes which are not, incidentally, very thorny. Plant 7 feet apart.

On the 3 star category then you can check Hostal Valencia, Comendador, Meson de la Flota and Beltran de Santa Cruz hotels. The only problem with this hotels is that you are not going to find availabilities if you don't book well in advance as they are highly demanded for their price and comfort.

There are some 2 star hotels in the Old Town area but I will only recommend those to people on a very tight budget. Their prices are very cheap - somewhere around 15.00 CUC per person per night. I will advise to first read the reviews on Trip Advisor website before you decide to book one of this. Lido, Caribbean and Lincoln Hotels in the Old town are the best 2 star hotels.

In general Hotels in Old Havana are the best ones in terms of location and quality of the service. If you want to stay in a 5 star hotel you will be looking at around 85.00 CUC per person per night. A more economic yet very decent accommodation would be the 4 star hotel option with prices around 60.00 CUC per person per night.

The Nisei Festival

Nisei, in Nihonggo, means 'second generation' ('ni' meaning two, and 'sei' probably meaning generation). This month-long festival is held usually in August, with the main attractions heralding the first two weekends of the fest. Nisei Week draws the attention and the support of both Japanese and non-Japanese festival goers, due to its grand floats and parades, and the month long activities that soon follow. This 2009, the festival will be celebrating its 69th year.

The festival grounds of the Nisei festival is tremendous. Following the original structure of the Japanese matsuri (or festival), the streets are lined with booths that are filled with food, games, prizes and others. There was a free-admission carnival and art show, but they were removed, and/or changed. Up 2006, an eating contest consisting of Japanese pot stickers or "gyoza" was added. The attraction was tremendous. Contestants each ate as much as nearing 200 or so.

The Tofu festival of Los Angeles was added. The festival was once a self-standing fest of sorts, but after the greater success of the tofu festival (beer was a factor that helped); it was now a festival that was held after the Nisei month.

They also have the Nikkei games, an open competition for everyone with running, martial arts and exhibitions. The Little Tokyo Anime Festival, another crowd bringer that spawns a massive amount of audience, most usually fans of Japanese animation. Cosplays and booths were comics are sold are usually rampant.

Ondo dancing, were people dance to the tune of an announcer (sometimes lyrics being read off a magazine!) happen too. The choreographer has the dancers carry chochin lanterns as they will the night away, dancing in the streets. The audience can dance too, with little supervision as the dance is often times just easy to follow and easy for the aching bones and joints. (Really!)

Tips and Information on Growing Gooseberries

It used to be popular to have gooseberry pie in the north on Grand National Day, but I suppose because of the quantity of sugar required the fruit became unpopular in the last great war and has never regained its popularity.

On the other hand, there still are special districts in East Sussex, like Newick and Chailey, where dessert gooseberries are grown in large quantities. Curiously enough, they pack their fruits in green bracken and these special packs are recognized in the London markets.

It is best to buy gooseberry bushes on a short stem or leg so that they stand well above the ground. This discourages suckers coming up from the roots and makes the bushes easier to pick and to manage. Further: when a bush has a leg 6-8 inches long, or more, it is possible to straw mulch underneath.

There are no special root stocks for gooseberries. They do perfectly well on their own roots. Gooseberry bushes undoubtedly need adequate quantities of potash and the sandier soils need more than the heavier clays as a rule. Fortunately, wood ashes produce the desired results, and so when prunings are burnt and when there is ash available from our wood fires, we keep them largely for the gooseberries and redcurrants. They are usually applied at the rate of 6-8 oz. to the sq. yard, and it is a good thing to give a dressing before planting, another one two years later, a third one three years after that, and then similar doses every third year onwards.

In small gardens, or where space is restricted in any way, there is no reason why gooseberries should not be trained as single or double cordons up a wall or fence, and then they should be planted at 2-21 feet apart. It is possible to have the bushes on a stem 4 feet high and thus they are well above the ground and are much easier to pick. A few people grow their gooseberries as fan-trained trees against a wall where they need a space of about 10 feet. Time to plant. Do the planting any time in the winter but preferably in November.

The normal gooseberry bush will be bought as a two-year-old bush. The cordons may be three years old, standard trees four years old and the fan-shaped types three years old also

It's like driving from coast to coast. At first, you are fortunate and get there oblivious to any problems. Now is the time to employ the skills you will learn.

Morocco - Discovering Marrakech

Starry North African nights, belly dancers, fire eaters, sword swallowers and couscous are just some of the fare on offer in Marrakech, Morocco.

Hop across the Mediterranean to the North African country of Morocco and you'll find a land of pulsating ancient cities, laid-back beach resorts and imposing natural sights including the Atlas Mountains and Sahara Desert. Often a strange, unpredictable land, Morocco offers a tantalising new experience around ever corner.

Start exploring at the very heart of Morocco - in the ancient trading town of Marrakech. Dusky red city walls encase the town, whilst inside soaring minarets of palaces cast their shadows upon the main square - Djemma el-Fna. The square is where the town's main trading takes place. Here you can mix with fire-eaters, belly dancers and the occasional snake-charmer if you're brave enough.

The square offers more than the usual tourist cliches. Yes there's the odd snake charmer and belly dancer but this is the principal trading point. Here you will find many more locals than tourists - all going about their daily rituals of collecting water and food.

An evening of entertainment As the sun goes down, story-tellers, sword swallowers and henna tattooists take to the square. Small groups of musicians strike up a tune whilst belly dancers twist their hips to the beat.

For as little as a few pounds the local food vendors provide a feast of Tajine stews, kebabs, couscous and spicy local delicacies. Here you can sit and enjoy mouth-watering food on wooden benches illuminated by lanterns.

A stroll in the Medina The Medina with its fascinating souks, selling almost anything you care to name, is also an exciting place to spend time (and money). There's an atmosphere of vitality and animation in the long narrow lanes that seem almost impossible to navigate and the area they cover appears vast. In fact it is fairly compact and once you have made a couple of visits finding your way around becomes easier. There are souks selling pottery, Berber jewellery, traditional kaftans, soft leather slippers, spices, herbal remedies for anything that might ail you, perfumes, sweet Moroccan cakes and, of course, rugs and carpets.

Make a point of heading out of Marrakech to explore further afield. The beautiful Atlas Mountains and Sahara desert are within easy reach of a day's excursion. For a peaceful escape from the bustle of Marrakech then head to the coastal resort of Agadir with its fabulous golden beaches or Essaouira with its charming fishing port.

Alpine Strawberries

Those who have been fascinated by the bowls of Alpine strawberries offered to them on the Continent may like to grow their own.

Cambridge Rearguard is for those who must have a very late variety. It does not do well however on poorly drained soil and is very subject to the Red Core disease and mildew. On dry sandy land it is a good cropper, and a strong grower. The flavour is good but rather acid and the fruits are rounded, conical and very dark crimson. Season very late.

Baron Solemacher is perhaps the best variety. Easy to grow and a heavy cropper.

Cambridge Vigor is a good variety for a frost pocket because the blossom trusses develop late Resistant to Red Core, botrytis and mildew. Excellent for canning, deep freezing and jam- making. Fruit is conical and glossy crimson. Season early.

Red Alpine Improved is very similar to Baron Solemacher though claimed by some to have a better flavour. N.B. Neither of these varieties produces runners.

Some choice varieties for compost growing of strawberries are Cambridge Favorite. The Hartley Mauditt strain of this variety is outstanding. Captain A. W. S. Agar, V.C., who supplies this variety, sends the plants to growers on or about August 22nd. A very heavy cropper. Fruit very large, conical and salmon scarlet. The plants arc compact, the runners have strong crowns and make rapid growth. An excellent variety for ganwicks and cloches. Season second early; Cambridge Late Pine. A strong-growing variety which because it flowers late is very resistant to frost and mildew. Produces large, round, conical, crimson fruits of excellent sweet flavour. First class for bottling and canning. Season late; Cambridge Prizewinner. Plants are tall with spreading foliage. The berries are light scarlet in colour but they are nice and firm. The first fruits are large and conical, the later ones smaller and more rounded unless the plants are properly fed and mulched, when the size keeps up. Loves being given a little extra potash in the form of wood ashes. Season early.

Growing Blackcurrants

Each year, in February, hoof and horn meal should be applied at the rate of about 3 oz. to the sq. yard. This is distributed over the straw and is allowed to wash in. On very light land, likely to be low in potash, wood ashes may be applied at lb. to the sq. yard, or a natural form of sulphate of potash at 2 oz. to the sq. yard. The potash dressing would only be necessary once every three or four years.

The blackcurrant bears on the young wood produced the previous season. Thus, when the bushes are seven or eight years of age and onwards, the aim is to remove a third of the branches, tackling those that are dropping on the ground first, so as to keep the bushes as upright as possible.

Fortunately with black currants it doesn't matter at all about cutting to just above a bud, for there seem to be pin buds which will break out into good growth on almost any part of the old wood. By the way-don't ever summer prune blackcurrants.

These should be cut down to within 2 inches of their base in the February after planting. These shoots being used to raise new bushes. Do not be tempted to plant the more expensive two- or three-years'-old bushes as offered by some nurserymen. These will only have to be cut down just as hard and the one-year-old bushes invariably settle down far more quickly and crop just as well in the long run.

The conventional distances are 5 feet by 5 feet, but under the straw mulch method I get the best results with having the rows 6 feet apart and the bushes only 3 feet apart in the rows. Eventually blackcurrant hedges are formed, and this helps the pollinating insects greatly, for they are able to move from bush to bush right up a row.

These insects hate having to fly from bush to bush when they are planted at distances of 5 to 6 feet, and, in fact, they will not do so in windy weather. The `hedge' method, therefore, encourages better fertilization and thus heavier yields.
